How to play video poker

Video poker is a relatively simple game. There are various types of video poker that might differ in terms of gameplay, but most commonly you are dealt five cards to begin with. You can choose any number of the cards to keep (or "Hold"). The remaining cards are then exchanged for new ones and your final combination is formed, with payouts awarded according to the payout table.

Note: If you want to learn more about the game before playing, check out our article that will teach you how to play video poker.

Various video poker games available in our database

If you are familiar with the world of video poker, you already know that there are many different versions of the game. Each type of video poker has its own set of rules, winning combinations and payouts, which means it’s also played differently.

Five of the most popular video poker games are listed below.

Jacks or Better

Probably the most well-known video poker game, and also one of the simplest ones. Jacks or Better video poker is played with classic cards (Ace to King in four suits) and jokers that substitute for any card to form the strongest possible winning combination.

The lowest winning combination is a pair of jacks, which is where the game has its name from.

Deuces Wild

Deuces Wild is played slightly differently. There is no joker in the deck. Instead, as the name suggests, deuces (twos) become wild.

This means there are much more wild cards that substitute for anything to form a winning combination, and there are also winning combinations that consist of deuces, four of them being the second highest hand you can get. This also means the lowest winning combination is higher, specifically three of a kind.

Pick'em Poker

This video poker game is quite different than the other four games on this list. Instead of getting five cards and choosing how many you want to keep, you start two cards and then are get another pair of cards, from which you have to pick one. After you choose the card you want to keep, the other one will "disappear", and you will get two more cards to complete your five-card hand.

Because of having to choose only one of two cards, this type of video poker is simpler than the others.

Double Bonus Poker

Double Bonus Poker is quite similar to Jacks or Better, but it has something extra to offer, which makes it a bit more complex.

The lowest winning combination is still a pair of jacks, but there are increased payouts for selected four of a kind combinations. That means, for example, that the payout for four aces is higher than the payout for four kings. This changes the optimal way to play the game, as well as increases the variance of the game.

Double Double Bonus Poker

Double Double Poker follows the same structure as Double Bonus Poker but offers even more "bonus" combinations with increased payouts. This further increases the variance, which means wins are less frequent, but tend to be bigger. If you like high-variance games, Double Double Bonus Poker is likely to be the best video poker game for you.

Other types of video poker

We only listed the five types of video poker we consider to be the most popular amongst players, but there are, of course, many other versions of the game. Before giving any of them a try, it’s a good idea to check out the payout table, rules, and strategy, so that you play the game correctly.

You can read more about how to play the five aforementioned types of video poker below.

Learn the strategies to play video poker optimally

As we already mentioned, video poker requires you to make good decisions. It is a game of chance with a theoretical RTP (which might different for any specific game), but in order to reach the theoretical returns, you need to know which cards to hold and which to exchange for new ones.

Note: Of course, when playing just for fun and without wagering real money, it’s not needed to play the game optimally. Still, it doesn’t hurt to learn the strategy. And if you ever play video poker for real money, you will know what to do. You can read general information about video poker strategy or check out the links below.

We have a separate article about each of the five types of video poker listed above. Each article explains the specifics of each game and also contains a strategy that will teach you how to make correct decisions:

Can video poker be played on mobile devices?

When it comes to online casino games, video poker tends to feel a bit dated. As games like slots, roulette and blackjack are more popular, they get more attention from game providers, new features and mobile-friendly versions. And video poker is left behind, at least slightly.

Of course, there are video poker games that can be played on mobile devices, but their number is a bit lower. If you want to play video poker for free on your mobile device, use the filter "Mobile Devices Supported" to display only games that will allow you to do so.

Other types of games in our database

Our database contains thousands of free casino games for you to choose from. The vast majority of these games belong to the category of slot machines, but you can also choose roulette, blackjack, baccarat and other less common types of games.
