Wild Gladiators review

Theme and Storyline

The Colosseum of Rome was a vast arena built to assuage the Roman populace’s blood lust with graphic and violent displays. Wild Gladiators goes soft on the blood and harder on the more glamorous aspects of the sword and sandals genre.

On the reels, beautiful Roman women and handsome Roman Emperors preside over tigers, swordsmen and chariot races, while the crowd cheers the action on from the background.

If you’ve ever wanted to experience the thrill of the Roman games but don’t want to learn Latin, here’s a place to start.

Graphics, Sounds and Animations

The graphics are a bit bland. While the background pops, the reels are decorated with some very weak artwork that does nothing to generate an atmosphere for the slot machine.

The music, on the other hand, is excellent. The soundtrack could have come directly from a Hollywood epic and does a lot to alleviate the weakness of the imagery.

The animations are high quality but feel divorced from the theme and setting.

Gameplay

The slot is a standard three row, five reel slot at first glance, but comes with a few nice little refinements. This is the usual setting for Pragmatic Play slots.

There is a sixth reel which is separate and selects a random multiplier between one and ten, which is applied to any wins that occur during that spin. There are also expanding Wilds and a pair of bonus features (details below) to keep the more adventurous player engaged.

There are twenty-five win lines in Wild Gladiators and all must be played every spin.

Wilds, Bonuses and Free Spins

The Wild symbol substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter symbol. It also pays out the same as the highest value symbol if you land three or more on a winline.

Any Wild that lands on the middle row on any reel, expands to fill that whole reel.

If a Super Bonus Wild lands on reel six, a Wild is added at random to every wheel. Any wilds on the middle row expand, and payouts are calculated.

The Scatter symbol can land on reels one, three or five, and will trigger a Free Spin bonus and pay out equal to your bet per spin if you hit a Scatter symbol on all three reels in one spin.

The Free Spin bonus starts with ten free spins. During the free spins, you can trigger the Super Bonus Wild and retrigger the Free Spin bonus.

Bet Sizes, RTP and Variance

The return to player of this game is 96.17%, more or less dead on our average of roughly 96%.

The range of bets on the site we tested ran from a minimum bet per spin of $/£/€0.25 up to a maximum of $/£/€125.00 per spin.

Despite the high-risk, high-reward stakes for the real gladiators of Rome, this game is designed to produce minimal variance. The five reels come with an additional multiplier reel but you can anticipate regular small wins.

This low volatility makes the game a poor match for our preferred slot strategies, which focus on seeking out high volatility slots.

Conclusion

Wild Gladiators has its good points. The gameplay, with its multipliers and expanding Wilds, is fun and engaging.

But the game has too many other weaknesses to let it pass muster. For example, the low volatility is a dealbreaker for us.

For those who prefer a low volatility ride, there are other issues to overcome. The lame visuals and average return to player, for example, do it no favours.
