Mahjong Ways 2 is themed around the Chinese game of mahjong. The symbols on the reels are based on mahjong tile designs. There are also mahjong tiles in the background art as well as Chinese coins and on the soundtrack, the shouts of mahjong players.
This is a simple theme that is easily realized by the team at PGSoft.
If you enjoy playing mahjong or the related solitaire versions of the game, then you may enjoy slapping down some tiles in the world of Mahjong Ways 2.
The graphics of Mahjong Ways 2 are about what you would expect. They are optimized for a vertical screen so on a computer, they are a bit small (and will not work on some browsers). However, they are clean and high def with enough detail in the movement and animation to make the game visually appealing.
The soundtrack is a bit busy with music and repeated barks from offscreen characters. You may wish to adjust the volume to find a version that doesn't drive you insane.
Overall, the front end of the slot is serviceable but not impressive.
Mahjong Ways 2 is a five reel slot with rows arranged in a 4-5-5-5-4 pattern.
An any way wins system means that winning combinations are made by symbols anywhere on consecutive reels, starting from the leftmost reel.
A cascade feature removes winning symbols and allows new symbols to drop from above. Each cascade applies a multiplier to any wins, increasing the more times the cascade is triggered. Sadly, the multipliers don't stick around. They reset as soon as the current cascade ends.
The maximum win on any given round is capped at a truly massive 100,000x the player's bet.
Wild symbols are triggered by Gold Plated symbols, these symbols transform into Wild when they are part of a winning combination. This then creates opportunities for more wins using other symbols during the following cascade spins.
When they appear, Wilds substitute for all other symbols except the Scatter.
If three or more Scatters land on a single spin, then they trigger a Free Spin Bonus. The player gets 10 free spins, during which the cascade multipliers are higher and additional Scatters each add 2 free spins to the total.
The Free Spin Bonus can be retriggered.
The return to player of Mahjong Ways is awesome. At 96.95%, it is almost a full percentage point higher than our yardstick for average of roughly 96%.
The upside of such a good RTP is somewhat cut by the game's medium volatility. Medium is a bit too low for use with our preferred slot machine strategies.
The range of bets on the site we tested ran from a relatively high minimum bet per spin of $/£/€0.60 up to a fairly solid maximum of $/£/€180 per spin.
With its high RTP of 96.95% and its massive volatility, Mahjong Ways 2 is a great slot to play with our preferred slot strategies.
Visually, it is easier to recommend if you play on a vertical screen, but overall the vibe and style are pleasant.
If you enjoy the iconography of mahjong tiles and want to carry that over into your slot experience, this is a pretty good place to start.
