Do you pay tax on gambling winnings in NJ?
Any gambling winnings (online or land-based, including sports betting) are considered taxable income and need to be reported on your federal tax return. Here is what you need to know:
Any type of gambling win is fully taxable at the federal level and must be reported as income on Form 1040.
New Jersey requires a 3% withholding tax on certain reportable casino and sportsbook winnings. This applies to residents and visitors.
The state permits players to subtract gambling losses from winnings when calculating net gambling winnings on the NJ-1040 return (your losses can't exceed the winnings).
Casinos and sportsbooks provide a W-2G form for winnings that meet federal reporting thresholds (these vary by game type).
Winnings have to be submitted on your federal tax return (Form 1040) and your New Jersey Gross Income Tax return (NJ-1040).
In regard to federal taxes, gambling losses can only be deducted if you itemize on Schedule A (only up to the amount of your winnings).
