Malta Gaming Authority (MGA)

Malta has become a very popular location with regard to remote gambling and is home to many online casino operators and software providers. Remote gambling now accounts for over 12% of the country’s GDP.

The Malta Gaming Authority was established in 2001, with the purpose of regulating all forms of gambling within the territory of Malta. It has since become recognized as one of the most trustworthy and reputable regulatory bodies in the world of gambling, both land-based and online.

Who is the MGA and what does it do?

The MGA is a not-for-profit organization that aims to protect the rights of players, promote responsible gambling and to ensure the industry is free from crime.

In order to achieve these goals, the MGA imposes very strict criteria regarding the operator’s reputation, competence and financial standing, all of which must be met for a company to be able to obtain a gambling license.

Additionally, after the license has been granted the operator will undergo regular reviews to ensure that they maintain high standards according to the MGA’s regulations. If a company breaks the rules, they risk having their license revoked.

The regulations set out by the Malta Gaming Authority are there to ensure that players can use online gambling services reliably, safe in the knowledge that their funds and data will be protected, and that the games they play will be provided in a fair and honest manner. They also ensure that online casinos can be held accountable for any illegal actions, and the organization acts as a direct point of contact for players that feel they have been mistreated and wish to lodge a complaint against an operator.

How to submit a complaint

Should you feel that you have been treated unfairly by an MGA-licensed casino you can easily submit a complaint.

Here you will find a simple form that you can use to lodge a complaint by providing details such as your name and contact information, details of the operator and your account with them, and a brief description of the incident/issue you have experienced. You can also upload files to support your claim, such as any relevant correspondence or evidence you may have retained.

Note:

There are some important points to be aware of when submitting a complaint:

  • The Authority may ask you for identification in order to process your complaint.
  • The MGA strongly recommends that you do your best to resolve your dispute directly with the operator’s support before lodging your complaint.
  • To register a complaint, you must contact the MGA via the form mentioned above. If you send a complaint by e-mail to info.mga@mga.org.mt, it will not be acknowledged.

How to check a license

Unfortunately, there may be some operators claiming to be licensed by the MGA, when in fact they are not. Some may display a fake logo or even a fake license to convince players that they are legitimate.

When reviewing a casino, we check all licenses for validity and authenticity, so you can be sure you will find genuine MGA-licensed casinos by searching our reviews.

If you would like to check if a company is regulated and licensed by the MGA, the simplest way is to visit the licensee register.

You can enter the company name and/or website into the form, press the search button and any relevant license information will be displayed.

Self-Exclusion

While all online gaming operators which are licensed by the MGA must offer players the ability to self-exclude, there is no system in place that enables players to self-exclude from multiple operators at once. Therefore, you must request exclusion from each casino separately.

Currently, a unified self-exclusion system is only offered for land-based casinos.
