Freak Machine by Mancala Gaming is about as dark and creepy as a slot game can get. It's set against a dark background with horror movie-worthy flickering lights and a slew of gory symbols, including a human heart, a bloody hand, and a pair of eyeballs in a jar. The animations are particularly terrifying, with symbols appearing on the grid from the depths of a fiery chamber.

The soundtrack is quite simple, giving an eerie vibe that sounds a bit like disembodied screams. You'll hear dramatic clunks and chinks as the symbols land, really ramping up the excitement.

Gameplay

Freak Machine is played on a grid of five reels and five rows, but there are no paylines. Instead, you'll trigger wins when you get enough of the same symbols in a Cluster anywhere on the grid – at least five of any symbol will pay out. After wins are paid out, the winning symbols are replaced with new ones. The high-paying symbols are the human body parts that we mentioned already, and even the lower-paying symbols (A, K, Q, J) look like human flesh and bones.

Wilds, Bonuses, and Free Spins

You can't miss the Wild symbol: it's a man with a fully-exposed brain. He substitutes for all regular symbols to create winning combinations.

The special symbols spell out the word DEATH, and each one can only land on a specific reel. Landing all five special symbols triggers the mini game. The mini game gives you the chance to select from three options (weapon icons), which award Multipliers of between 2x and 36x.

Freak Machine also comes with Scatter symbols, and you'll need three, four, or five of them to get 10, 15, or 20 Free Spins, respectively.

Whenever you collect symbols in Clusters, your Progress Bar will increase, awarding Multipliers of up to 20x.

If there's one disappointing thing about Freak Machine, it's the fact that the Return to Player (RTP) percentage is significantly below average, at 95%. We usually look for games with an RTP of at least 96%. The volatility of the game is rated as medium, so both large and small wins are possible, but gameplay tends to be less exciting than on high volatility slots.

Conclusion

There are plenty of horror-themed slot games, but this one is particularly scary. Mancala Gaming has gone all out with the bloody symbols and a generally terrifying vibe, plus the Progress Bar and Multipliers offer plenty of winning potential. Unfortunately, the elephant in the room is the low RTP, combined with medium volatility, which is far from what we usually look for in a slot, so we wouldn't tend to recommend this one.
