Strolling Staxx Cubic Fruits is more about a style than a theme. The setting is a tranquil countryside stream, into which a constant deluge of cubic fruit falls. The trees in the background are grown into cubic topiary and even the clouds seem to take on a boxy silhouette in the sky.
We are never to know what ungodly genetic catastrophe led to this ecosystem, but whatever it is it makes for an oddly soothing world of running water and verdant greens.
The graphics are top-notch, both in terms of execution and design. The slot has a lovely glossy feel and the 3D animations are done with a satisfying flare.
The soundtrack is very low key, with the sound of running water in the background and a very light musical accompaniment. When you hit a bonus, this music kicks up a gear, but on the whole, the vibe seems to be tranquillity in a way that is especially engaging in the world of slots where loud noises and ringing bells have always been de rigueur.
The basic gameplay is that of a five reel slot with three rows. There are ten winlines across these rows.
In the absence of more typical bonus features that might be triggered by a Scatter or Bonus symbol, Strolling Staxx Cubic Fruits has instead a system based around its stacked and Colossal symbols (see below for details).
Colossal symbols are two-by-two or three-by-three symbols which, when combined with the Strolling Staxx feature, can be big winners. You can pay extra to allow these to land partially on the reels, increasing the chance of hitting blocks of a given symbol.
The Wild symbol substitutes for all other symbols and can land as a Colossal symbol.
The Strolling Staxx of the title are triggered when any reel lands with three of one symbol. This triggers a series of respins in which all symbols of the same kind as the large one are locked in place and the rest re-spun. The winnings are then calculated and all symbols of that kind move one space to the left, before another respin is triggered. The respins end when the reel that triggered the respin has fully moved off the left hand side of the reels.
These bonuses make the game feel smoother and the bonuses more integrated into the game, adding to the zen-like atmosphere of the game.
The return to player of this game is 95.95%. More or less dead on our rough yardstick of 96% for the industry average.
The range of bets on the site we tested was from a minimum of $/£/€0.10 per spin, up to a maximum of $/£/€100.00 per spin without the Bonus Bet, and up to $/£/€150.00 with it.
The volatility of this game is medium, whereas we prefer the highest possible variance in the games we recommend as these match best with our preferred strategies.
Despite its charming visual style and delightful sound design, Strolling Staxx Cubic Fruits is let down by its medium volatility and decidedly average return to player.
It is by no means a bad slot, but we would prefer something with a bit more bang for our visitors' bucks.
