Theme and Storyline

Book of Lords, as the title suggests, is a rip off of the immensely popular Book of Ra. The two properties are unrelated with Book of Lords being put out by Amatic and Book of Ra being owned by Novomatic.

Both games feature behatted explorers raiding tombs and arks in the deserts of Egypt with the usual design choices of ankhs and animal headed gods up the wazoo that the Egyptian treasure hunter them requires.

But unlike most rip offs, Book of Lords (despite its clunky title) improves over the original with better graphics and improved gameplay.

Graphics, Sounds and Animations

The graphics are rather neat, with a high quality three dimensional feel and a visual style that is highly reminiscent of the 1930s adventure serials that influence the modern properties that influenced the slot that influenced this slot.

The music probably needs to be muted after a few loops but does an alright job of setting the scene along with the simple, but effective animations for wins and reel spins.

Gameplay

The base game is a typical slot with ten winlines, five reels and three rows.

The base game slot is somewhat livened up by its bonus, but as you can see below, these are pretty basic and really only involve a single special symbol.

Overall the game does fall a little flat when it comes to the gameplay aspects.

Wilds, Bonuses and Free Spins

The game has a combined Scatter, Bonus and Wild symbol which substitutes for any symbol on a winline. The Wild also pays out for hitting three or more of them, and will then trigger 10 free spins.

During the free spins another symbol is chosen at random to be an expanding symbol. It will expand after any wins have been calculated and then wins will be recalculated for a second time.

Bet Sizes, RTP and Variance

The return to player of this game had not been made available by the publisher, this is a major red flag and prevents us making a recommendation for this. Multiple other sources suggest an RTP of 96.71% which, if true, is pretty decent putting it a little above our yardstick for average of 96%.

The range of bet on the site we tested was €/$/£0.10 to £/$/€50.00. This is a somewhat low spread for any high rollers out there, but should be fine for most people’s bankrolls.

The volatility of this game is high, which is appealing to us, as we tend to choose high volatility for our preferred strategies.

Conclusion

If you liked the hugely popular Book of Ra, we would recommend giving this a go. The RTP is (probably) better and the graphics vastly improved.

However, overall the nice design does not make up for its several flaws and we cannot give this much of a recommendation.
