Set in the wilds of America, Buffalo King manages to cram together the plains dwelling buffalo, forest dwelling moose, and the natural columns of monument valley into one strange compaction of US life.
Bald eagles proudly glare from the reels, while cougars and wolves prowl.
It’s a wild, wild slot. But the Buffalo King promises order. If you can find him.
The visuals on Buffalo King are pretty nice. The animals are rendered in dramatic colour schemes. Both the background and the reels seem coloured by the blood red and deep purple of a desert sunset.
The animations are a little underwhelming, a subtle swelling of the symbols indicates a win. But it is easy to miss. But such things are small beer in a slot that pops visually the way this one does.
The music is all dirty banjos and soft fiddles. Real wild west music. But played down enough that they feel more atmospheric than harmonic. The result is something with subtle character, and which isn’t jarring for the player to listen to at great length.
Buffalo King is a six reel slot with four rows.
It uses an any way wins system that means winning combinations are formed by any sequence of three or more matching symbols that run from left to right starting anywhere in reel one. The result is that there are 4,096 ways to win.
There is no gamble feature, and just a simple free spin bonus (details below) to keep things interesting and to spice them up.
The Wild symbol substitutes for all symbols except the Bonus symbol. Wild symbols do not appear on reel one. This cuts down the number of wins a player will hit and keeps the volatility up.
Three or more Bonus symbols landing in one spin triggers the Free Spin bonus. The player gets 8 Free Spins for three Bonus symbols, with the reward going all the way up to a massive 100 Free Spins for six Bonus symbols.
During the Free Spin bonus, Wilds get assigned a multiplier between x2 and x5. This ramps up the possible winnings. Free Spins can be retriggered. In addition, during Free Spins, two Bonus symbols will add five free spins to the player's total.
The return to player of this game is 96.06%, spot on our yardstick for average of roughly 96%.
The range of bets on the site we tested ran from a minimum bet per spin of $/£/€0.40 up to a maximum of $/£/€60.00 per spin.
The volatility of this game is high, making it a good one to try out with our preferred slot machine strategies which target the highest possible volatility.
If you like the genre of slots that are based around the larger fauna of the American West, this is a pretty good version of that slot, by Pragmatic Play.
The visuals are nicely done, in that very familiar style. But with a bit more emphasis on sunset tones. The music is good, the gameplay solid, and most players will find most features unobtrusive.
But most importantly it has an acceptable RTP (right around average, in fact) and high volatility. These two things combined make it a good candidate for playing with our preferred strategies.
