Can't get enough of ancient Egypt? There are plenty of modern slots like Book of Dead out there, but Ramses Book by Gamomat takes things right back to basics.

The game is set inside an Egyptian temple, but you can't see much of the background on either desktop or mobile. Instead, the game grid takes up most of the screen, and plays host to themed symbols like a pharaoh, obelisk, and falcon. The soundtrack is a bit disappointing – don't expect a cinematic Egyptian tune. You'll just have the traditional clinks and chinks of a mechanical slot machine to keep you company.

Gameplay

Land at least two of the high-paying symbols or three of the lower-value ones to trigger a win. Matching symbols need to align on adjacent reels from left to right on one of the 10 paylines. You'll also have the option to play with five active paylines instead, which brings your stake down, but also gives you fewer chances to win.

The themed symbols pay out the biggest wins, while you'll get smaller payouts if you land the jeweled hearts, clubs, spades, or diamonds.

Wilds, Bonuses, and Free Spins

The special Book symbol is the Wild, and it substitutes for all other symbols, with the exception of the bonus symbol during Free Spins. Wilds also pay out the biggest possible wins.

If you land at least three of the Book symbols, you'll be rewarded with 10 Free Spins. Before the round starts, one symbol is randomly selected as the bonus icon. Reels with bonus symbols are stamped to become full bonus reels, awarding you with additional wins. The Free Spins round can be re-triggered by landing more Scatters.

If you're feeling brave, you might want to use the Gamble feature to try to increase your winnings after each spin. The Card Gamble lets you try to predict what color a virtual card will be when drawn, while the Ladder Gamble is a riskier option that could see you stepping up a ladder towards better rewards.

Ramses Book is a high volatility slot game, as we found out when we gave it a spin. Wins didn't come around too often, but they were worth the wait. The game's Return to Player (RTP) percentage is set at 96.15%, which is good news, as it's a little above the industry average of 96%.

As Ramses Book has adjustable paylines, you can play for as little as $/€/£0.05 with five lines active. The maximum bet with all 10 paylines active is $/€/£20, which is in line with other games. You could win up to 5,000x your stake on any spin.

Conclusion

Ramses Book might not be the best game we've ever played, but we were pleasantly surprised by how good the overall experience was. The Free Spins and Gamble features add some extra excitement to the gameplay, which is needed because the game is sadly lacking in visuals and sound effects. The RTP, volatility, and max win are all decent, so you won't regret giving this slot a chance.
