Mahjong 88 combines all the thrills of a real money slot game with the fun of the classic tile-based game of Mahjong. This is Play'n GO's first 8x8 slot, and it looks totally different from almost all other casino games.
There's something quite calming and tranquil about the gameplay, and the same can be said for the soundtrack. There are no cliche casino sounds here, just a relaxing tune of strings and keys, and the gentle chime of the tiles.
When you click on the "spin" button, you won't see symbols landing on the reels like you might expect. Instead, a set of tiles will be revealed, and matching tiles pay out. You'll need to match at least four of the same tiles in a Cluster on the grid to win.
The highest-paying tiles are the colorful flowers, while the other patterns award smaller wins. Winning symbols transform into new tiles to give you another chance of winning.
A few Concealed Tiles appear in every round, and when they're revealed, they'll take on the same design as one of the adjacent tiles, giving you an extra chance to win.
There's no shortage of special features here, from the Super Charge feature to random Season Bonuses.
Firstly, the Fortune Frog charges up whenever you land winning combinations and will activate after 33 winning symbols. When this happens, you'll be randomly awarded a special feature. For example, you might get the Spawn feature, which transforms other symbols, or the Hop feature, which transforms and destroys other symbols.
The Super Charge feature activates after 88 winning symbols, multiplying your wins by 5x.
As you play, you'll navigate your way through the seasons, from spring to summer to autumn to winter. The seasons change randomly, and you'll get the special "Season Bonus" when the season changes.
Season Wilds can be triggered randomly after non-winning spins, and each season has its own Wild, which substitutes for other symbols and comes with special features.
You can set your stake for between $/€/£0.10 and $/€/£100, using the options at the bottom of the screen. The game's Return to Player (RTP) percentage is 96.62%, above average for a video slot. The game is highly volatile, so wins tend to be more spaced out, but on average, they're a little bigger than you might expect, making for exciting gameplay.
Mahjong 88 is one of the most unique slot games we've seen recently, and we'd definitely recommend it for fans of the Mahjong game. The maximum win of 5,000x your stake isn't the biggest, but with special features like the Fortune Frog, you still have a good chance of bagging yourself a win.
