The Reel Steal clearly has in mind 70s crime movies of the Thief, The Getaway, or Bullett kind. That grainy kind of neo-noir that involves a lot of turtleneck sweaters and Colt .45 automatics.
To that end it manages to capture the tone pretty well with muscle cars on the Wild’s and safes, money bags and diamond briefcases on the other symbols along with an array of heist movie archetypes.
If you ever wanted to feel like Gene Hackman in The French Connection while playing a slot, this game is for you.
The graphics do look a bit dated in this NetEnt's offering. The art style though well chosen for the theme looks a bit cheap and is not massively helped by the pretty basic animations.
The musical accompaniment is a classic 70s funk track that fits the setting to a T, and is one of the better design choices made by the game creators.
Overall the look of the game could be considerably improved.
The Real Steel is a five reel slot game with nine win-lines for you to play.
There are no gamble features and you must play all nine win-lines which makes for a limited degree of personalisation.
The main variation to break up the standard game is the Free Spin Bonus (details of which below). This means the gameplay can be a bit samey and if you like some variation in your games, you may want to look elsewhere for something a little more imaginative with its features.
The Wild symbol fills in for any other symbol except for the Scatter symbol. If you manage to hit a winning combo with a Wild symbol the wins are multiplied times five.
The Scatter symbol pays out if you hit two or more anywhere on any reel. Hitting two will net you two times your bet per spin, up to one hundred times your bet per spin for five.
Hitting three or more Scatter symbols will trigger the free spin bonus. Fifteen free spins for hitting three symbols. Then twenty and twenty-five for four and five symbols.
The free spin bonus and wilds are both very rare but make for huge payouts when they come along. Especially when combined since during free spins, wins with Wilds are multiplied by twenty-five and Scatters add a further free spin each time one lands.
The return to player for The Reel Steal is 95.87%. Slightly lower than our rough yardstick of 96% for average.
The bet per spin ranged from a minimum bet of £/$/€0.09 up to a maximum of £/$/€90.00 on the site we tested.
The Reel Steel also has medium to high volatility which goes well with our preferred strategies.
The Reel Steal is a solid, if overly basic slot game with a nice soundtrack, slightly sub par graphics and an average return to player.
The main appeal of the game if any, is the relatively high volatility which we are fans of.
