If you actively give your lawyer an instruction, they must follow it. Clients have the right to give instructions, and they can't simply circumvent that. The law firm confirmed to me that they wouldn't reach a settlement without my consent anyway; they would always consult with me first and keep me informed.

It depends on the provider; sometimes you have no choice but to compromise. If something like this were to happen in Germany, you certainly wouldn't make a deal with, for example, Tipico.
