Theme and Storyline

The slot world is full of knock off and copyright skirting titles, but few of them are done with such elegance and care for their source material as Moon Princess. Play'n GO's Moon Princess borrows the style and tone of Sailor Moon, an anime series based on the manga of the same name.

While Moon Princess does not offer much in the way of content to explain its world, the characters come through vibrantly. Each of the "Princesses" has a magical power (which works as a fun feature on the reels) and a Japanese schoolgirl outfit.

For fans of the anime – or for those who enjoy a more Polly Pocket-like visual scheme – Moon Princess creates a familiar, but still fun and upbeat, world in which to lose yourself.

Graphics, Sounds and Animations

The design elements of this slot are all excellent. High-quality visual design is coupled with detailed and characterful animations.

The background of slowly drifting hearts complement the well-drawn and constantly mobile sprites, while the reels are full of bright and fun symbols. Animations provide constant motion, be it the winning cascades, the various counters, or the princesses themselves, everything is brought to life for the player.

Even the music is top notch. A pastiche of the Sailor Moon soundtrack with an ambient enough tone that it doesn’t become grating.

Gameplay

Moon Princess pays out when a row of three or more symbols occur in a straight line, either vertically or horizontally.

Winning symbols are removed and the symbols allowed to fall down to form new winning combinations. Unlike in a typical cascade slot, in Moon Princess, no new symbols fall down from above the reels. Instead, after each cascade, the multiplier for all subsequent cascades in the current spin is increased by one.

If there are exactly three symbols in the winning combination, the middle symbol is not destroyed. Instead, it is transformed into a Wild.

There are plenty of additional features to keep things spicy. There are a number of counters and triggerable features, as well as a bonus in which the player can choose one of three games of varying volatility. These are described in full below.

Wilds, Bonuses and Free Spins

The Wild symbol substitutes for all symbols.

On non-winning rounds, one of three girl powers can be triggered: Love, who transforms one set of symbols into another; Star, who adds up to two Wild symbols to the reels; and Storm, who destroys two sets of symbols.

There is also a Trinity Counter which resets each spin. This Trinity Counter has three sections. For each set of three winning Princess symbols, one section fills up. For each set of four, two sections fill up. And a set of five will fill the counter in one go.

If the counter fills up, the reels are respun and then all three Princess Features are triggered in order on the new set of symbols. This feature is called the Princess Trinity and can be activated only once per spin.

When the player completely clears the grid of every symbol or if only Wilds are left on the reel, then the Free Spin Bonus is triggered.

The player is then offered a choice of three options, one for each of the Princesses. Depending on which option the player chooses, they will receive more or fewer free spins with differing features. The choices are designed so that the fewer spins the player receives, the higher the volatility will be.

During the Free Spins, any spin that does not include a win triggers the chosen Princess’s effect.

Filling up the Trinity Counter in the Free Spins will retrigger the Free Spins (up to a maximum of 20 free spins total).

Additionally, the multiplier does not reset between free spins, though it does max out at x20.
