Although nothing much to look at, Scudamore’s Super Stakes is real winner with a good RTP and high volatility.
The Scudamore’s are something of horse racing dynasty, three generations of jockeys and trainers, one of which, Peter Scudamore, won a knighthood for services to racing. It is Peter’s career that Scudamore’s Super Stakes is based around.
With a race track in the background and jockeys in the fore, Scudamore’s Super Stakes takes you on a day at the races which blends jockey-ish competition and the audience’s excited gambling.
Unfortunately, despite its grand name, Scudamore’s Super Stakes suffers from an unpleasant visual style. The graphics on this game have the look of a 90’s sports broadcast, which may be deliberate, but results in a hugely unattractive game to look at.
The music, too, is redolent of old school TV theme tunes as well. While fine for 30 seconds at the top of a show, listening to it on a loop is a real grind. This is definitely one of those soundtracks you will want to mute immediately on starting the game up.
The base game is a pretty standard slot of three rows and five columns, across which there are twenty win lines. The game has a pretty standard structure from that base, but does include a fun little side bet in the form of the Bet Slip feature.
The Bet Slip Feature allows you to place an over / under bet on how many of a given symbol will land anywhere on the reels in a given number of spins. The rarer the symbol the bigger the payout if you win.
This adds a pleasing extra element of risk to the game and works well with the horse racing theme.
The Wild symbol substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter symbol.
Before each spin takes place there is a chance that the Random Wilds feature will be triggered. This adds two to five Wild symbols to the reels at random.
Hitting three or more Scatter symbols will trigger the Peter’s Classic Cup bonus.
During the Peter’s Classic Cup you are awarded free spins. The game changes to a five by four grid, while a race counter runs at the bottom. When one of the counters "wins" the race, the bonus round ends.
Before the bonus begins, the players must choose one of four horses to bet on. These each have a different multiplier between 50x at the smallest and 5000x at the biggest. The highest multiplier is attached to the least likely horse to win.
Each time a horse’s symbol (or its associated ace to jack symbol) is part of a winning combo, it moves towards the finishing line. First horse to move four spaces wins, ending the bonus game.
Wins are added to the payout for your horse should it win.
The return to player of this game is 96.99%, making it more or less a full percentage higher than the rough average we use of 96%.
The range of bets on the site we tested ran from a minimum bet per spin of $/£/€0.10 up to a maximum of $/£/€100.00.
The volatility of this game is high, making it a perfect match for our preferred strategies.
Scudamore’s Super Stakes is a delightful slot machine that couples a reasonable return to player with high volatility and well paced gameplay.
The bonus is creative and thematically on point, and the Bet Slip feature adds an extra layer of excitement to the gameplay.
In fact the only major downsides of the game are that the visuals are rather ugly and the soundtrack somewhat annoying.
If you can get past its superficial flaws though, it is a really nice little slot.
