How important is good forum moderation?

I think good moderation makes a big difference to the quality of an online forum. Keeping spam and irrelevant posts under control makes it much easier to find useful discussions and have genuine conversations with other members.

What do you think makes a well-moderated forum?

I think that’s actually quite important.

How do you personally prefer it? Do you like being able to talk and interact with the moderators when they’re active and attentive, or would you rather moderators stay more in the background and mainly focus on things like spam, rule violations, and keeping the forum organized?
