Downtown is a solid low-medium variance slot with a look stolen from Sin City and some rather weak visuals. It makes up for this with an RTP of 97.7% and a nicely paced experience with regular free spins and bonus rounds.
Read full reviewDowntown is, more or less, an unlicensed Sin City game. Several characters are lifted almost completely from Frank Miller’s masterpiece of minimalist art and maximised misogyny.
For those unfamiliar with the comic book and its film adaptations, this slot brings that dark 1930s noir-inflected crime comics to the spinning reels.
The symbols do their best to mimic the art of the comic and film, both of which went for high contrast black and white.
It’s a shame that the whole theme is tainted by being rather weakly imitative, rather than a quality pastiche.
The visuals are a bit of a letdown, anyone familiar with the source material can see the poor quality of the imitation in the artwork.
However, the animations are clean enough and once you get into the game the style grows on you.
The sound design is faintly irritating, but as with most slots, you can turn off the effects that are most bothersome.
The gameplay is at least solid in Downtown. The main game is a standard three by five-reel game with regular bonus hits to switch things up.
These bonus games (details below) are the main way in which the game breaks up its gameplay and allow for the game to take on a pleasing pace.
The unfortunate downside to Downtown’s regular bonus wins is that, of course, their regularity makes for much smaller wins each time you do hit one.
There are two main bonus features.
The first is a bonus game which is triggered by hitting three or more of the ‘police cell’ Scatter symbols. While these pay out 30, 100 and 200 coins for hitting 3, 4 or 5 Scatter symbols respectively they also trigger a bonus round in which you get to shoot at various targets. Each target you hit pays out a bonus amount.
The second bonus are the ‘femme fatale’ Free Spin symbols which give you 5 free spins for hitting 3 symbols, 10 for hitting 4 symbols and 15 if you manage to land five.
The main change to the reels for the free spins is that all payouts are doubled.
There is also a wild symbol that will substitute for any other symbol barring the Scatter and Free Spin symbols.
The 97.7% return to player is one of the main draws of Downtown and reflects the generally high RTP of slots from 1x2 Gaming.
The variance is not very high on this game with its regular medium sized payouts on the bonuses. So factor that into your bankroll and strategic considerations.
The site we tested allowed a bet per spin from £/$/€0.05 per spin up to £/$/€75.00 per spin. Though this will vary across platforms.
The main appeal of Downtown is its frequent bonus rounds that make for a fun gaming experience. Unfortunately, this makes for small bonus wins when you do win, and the whole visual style of the slot is a little tacky looking.
If you can get past the visuals and are looking for a fun, low-medium variance slot this might be one of the better experiences for you.
