Theme and Storyline

Fruit is less a theme or story line in Berryburst than a description.

The reels are made up of strings of fruit, you win by getting as much fruit of one kind, and the background is an ocean of fruit juice into which the player is forever sinking.

Plenty of slots have done fruit, but not many have done it with this level of class.

Graphics, Sounds and Animations

NetEnt’s design team have rendered every berry, segment and slice of fruit in detailed 3D. The visuals are a little garish rendered as they are in the oranges and purples of fruit, but they are also fitting.

The music is a Jamaican style steel band playing elevator music and is probably best switched off, but the bubble sound effects of the reels is rather soothing.

Overall the design is about as good as you could hope given the theme and certainly doesn't stand out enough to ruin the game nor to mark it for greatness.

Gameplay

The gameplay is fairly simple, just push the button and watch the reels turn.

There are five reels, three rows, but in place of win-lines you get paid for any group of vertically and horizontally (not diagonally) connected fruit of the same kind.

The only other major change is that in place of bonus symbols they have amped up wilds.

Wilds, Bonuses and Free Spins

The only special symbol in Berryburst is the Wild symbol which on landing expands to fill its entire reel. Wins are then calculated and a respin triggered.

During the respin any Wilds remain locked in place. You can hit more Wilds, and trigger further re-spins during a respin.

When the re-spin is done the winnings are then calculated and added your account.

Bet Sizes, RTP and Variance

Berryburst’s return to player is 96.56%. This is a little above the rough yardstick we use of around 96%.

The bet sizes on the site we tested started out at £/$/€0.10 per spin and went up to a healthily sized £/$/€200 per spin.

Conclusion

Berryburst does a lot with very little. It takes the fruit machine theme and some spicy wilds and mixes them up into a sweet dessert that works in a way you wouldn’t quite expect.
