"They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine, plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth." Revelation 6:7–8
The four harbingers of the Apocalypse in Christian Eschatology and the wider popular culture come ahead of the end of the world trampling all beneath their feet. Famine, Death, Plague and Pestilence give the planet a rough time of it before ushering in the end times.
For such a bleak theme, Spinomenal have managed to make 4 Horsemen into something that feels truly epic.
Spinomenal does a good line in lush, mythology-based slots and this is certainly one of them. The artwork is reminiscent of the Mordor sections of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and immerses the player immediately in the world of the game.
The artwork is well served by the fiery animations for winning sequences and by the rich soundscape of epic music and clanking reel sounds.
So, visually this slot is a real treat, generating atmosphere and a unified style for days. Specifically the end of days.
The gameplay is pretty straightforward for such a visually distinct game. The reels are arranged in an unusual 3-4-4-4-3 format, and there are a few randomly triggered features to keep things interesting, but these are superficial complications.
In practice, this is a simple slot with a veneer of complexity. Not that it is a bad thing, but don’t expect to be wowed by innovation here.
The Wild symbol substitutes for all symbols except the Free Spin and Bonus symbols. They can be stacked on reels one and five in the base game.
Landing a Free Spin symbol on each of reels one and five will trigger the Free Spin bonus. Ten free spins are awarded and a ‘Prize Box’ is added to the reels for the duration of the bonus. The Prize Box spins along with the reels and awards a multiplier or additional free spins when it stops spinning.
The Bonus symbol can appear on any reel in the base game. These symbols have a randomised number on them which is based on your bet size. When you hit a Bonus symbol, it pays out the number on it directly.
The return to player of this game is 94.50%, which is hellishly low. Our yardstick for average is around 96%, which 4 Horsemen comfortably undershoots. Such an extortionate vigorish puts this slot on our list of the damned immediately.
The volatility of this game is medium, which also makes this slot a weak match for our preferred slot machine strategies.
The range of bets on the site we tested ran from a minimum bet per spin of $/£/€0.30 up to a maximum of $/£/€300.00 per spin, which would be a good spread if the mathematics of this slot machine weren’t already so unappealing.
Although atmospheric and well made, 4 Horsemen does not come even close to a recommendation from us.
The strong visuals simply cannot make up for the brutally low return to player, and the medium volatility precludes it from being useful to players following our slot strategies.
Avoid this one like the plague, and also famine, pestilence and war.
