Climb the Towers by choosing a safe path through its levels in this unusual but stylish game from Turbo Games.
Read full reviewThe action of Towers takes place on a grey-on-grey digital playing board.
There is no real story, just a simple setup with the playing grid in the centre and key information laid out around the edges.
As such this theme will appeal to minimalists, brutalists, and fans of the 1990s computer game called Minesweeper.
In keeping with the minimalist gameplay and theme, the graphics are sleek with a modern feeling with green font and black backgrounds. There are few visual elements and almost all of them are functional.
As a result, animations are limited as are the various UI elements.
There is no music track, just a few sound effects to punctuate the input of player choices and to emphasize wins and losses. The sounds feel more ergonomic, highlighting actions and events, rather than atmospheric.
Overall, Towers has a very clean and simple front end that does the job as efficiently as possible without feeling cheap.
Towers is not a classic slot. The gamespace is made up of nine rows with a set of blank tiles on each row.
Some tiles hide a tick, and some hide a cross. The number of tiles, the ratio of ticks to crosses, and the payout per row is determined by the difficulty setting.
In order to play, the player needs to select a tile on the first row. If they choose a cross, the player loses their stake. If they choose a tick, they win and can either cash out, or gamble by choosing again on the next row.
Each round continues until the player cashes out, picks a cross, or successfully navigates all nine rows.
The maximum win on any given round is capped at 3,840.21x the player's bet.
There are no wilds, bonuses, or free bets. Towers is a very pure, very simple game and all you get is the choice of which tile to click next.
The payouts for Towers at each level of difficulty are set to a return to player (RTP) of 95%. This is way below our yardstick for average of roughly 96%.
As a result, each increase in difficulty increases the game's volatility as do the number of levels the player clicks before cashing out. The highest difficulty has a very high volatility if you play until you reach the top of the tower. Meanwhile, the lowest difficulty has low volatility, especially if you cash out on row one.
The high volatility is better for use with our preferred slot machine strategies, but the low RTP undoes any upside.
The range of bets on the site we tested ran from a minimum bet per spin of $/£/€0.10 up to a maximum of $/£/€100 per spin.
Towers is a cool idea with a perfectly executed minimalist style and unusual gameplay.
The visual style and style of gameplay won't appeal to everyone, but will work well for those who enjoy their games simple and strange.
However, the low RTP rules out a recommendation from us. It is simply too expensive to play this game.
