Welcome to the Chinese year of the pig. Meet The Fortune Pig, a smiley porcine friend who might just bring you some good luck this year; you’ll need it to beat the low RTP on this slot.
The Fortune Pig is one of many East Asian pig-themed slots to have come out in 2019 thanks to the shift into to the Chinese year of the Pig.
With the red and gold colour scheme that is de rigueur for slot designers dipping into the Chinese New Year marketplace, it also hits most of the other standard visual markers: the square holed coins, red money bags and a background of Imperial era roof tiles.
It shows a profound lack of imagination, but is pretty competently executed so it is hard to hold that against it.
The background is made up of gorgeous animated dragons with cherry blossoms falling in the foreground, ahead of the reels. Animations like this do help sell the atmosphere of the game as does the sound design.
The soundtrack is a pretty excellent blend of percussion and flutes in that typical 16 tone style of South East Asian classical music.
The graphics are clean and rendered with real care. The overall impression is pretty good at the superficial level.
The gameplay is fairly straightforward. There are five reels and three rows with 25 win lines on them. The main game has stacked Wilds and a few interesting bonus games to spice things up (see below for full details).
Overall, the gameplay is pretty standard and nothing to write home about.
The Wild symbols substitute for all other symbols apart from the Scatter and Money Bag symbols. In the main game and free spins, the Wild symbols are stacked, allowing for bigger wins if you land a few on one reel.
Scatter symbol is present on reels 1,3 and 5. Hit a Scatter on all three reels and you’ll trigger the Fortune Free Spins. This is a free spin bonus in which you get 8 free spins.
During the free spins there is a chance of up to five reels synchronising and showing the same symbols in the same spots, massively increasing the likelihood of large winning combinations.
Landing five Money Bag symbols on one spin triggers Cash Respins. Each Money Bag symbol has a coin value on it, which can vary widely.
You receive three spins on the counter and all Money Bag symbols are locked in place until the Cash Respins end. If you land a Money Bag, the counter resets to three and the game continues until the spins counter reaches zero or every slot is filled with a Money Bag symbol. At the end of the Respins you win the total coin value of all the Money Bags on the reels.
The return to player of this game is 95.14%. This is almost a full percentage point below our yardstick of 96%. As a result, we would avoid recommending this slot unless it had strong positives in other areas.
The range of bets on the site we tested ran from a minimum of $/£/€0.25 to a maximum bet per spin of $/£/€25.00. This is a small range that cuts out many low stakes players and fairly high stakes players limiting the game’s appeal.
The volatility of this game is low to medium, making it far too low to use with our preferred strategies and the last straw in terms of our ability to recommend this slot.
The Fortune Pig is much prettier than its name would suggest. It has an excellent visual style and though unimaginative is a solid slot in its genre.
Unfortunately, being somewhat basic means it can’t overcome its low volatility and high vigorish.
In the end we are unable to recommend this slot.
