The Lott, the lottery outfit in Brisbane, Queensland in Australia, has released news that two friends have managed to scoop up a $1.25m jackpot.

The men, lifelong friends, have been playing the lottery for years, keeping a detailed spreadsheet to document their tickets, numbers, and the outcomes of each draw. They did so for more than 20 years of trying before Lady Luck finally smiled at them.

Consistency over 20 years pays off for a pair of friends

They may need to not worry about sorting out the paperwork any more as they have won the Saturday Lotto draw, leaving them at least six figures richer apiece. The winners told the lottery that they had received an email on Sunday morning that they had won from The Lott.

The immediate reaction was not one of enthusiasm, as the pair thought they had hit one of the smaller rewards.

"I rang up my friend straight away and I asked him to give me the ticket number so I could look up the results of our ticket. I looked it up straight away and I was in complete shock," one of the two friends who received the original email from the lottery.

Although the winners preferred to remain anonymous and circumspect about new-found riches, they did not mind sharing the celebratory details with the lottery, which was published as part of an official press release.

Planning how to spend the money next

The friends quickly set up a small celebration at the house of the person who had received the mail, enjoying a bottle of wine with his friend and his wife over the evening.

"We also talked about what we should do with the prize and reminisced on how long we’ve been playing together for," one of the people told the lottery. The pair did not share much more about the actual methodology they had used for winning. Consistency seemed to be the key.

Nobody thought to ask whether they changed their numbers or stuck to the same basic combinations, nor how many entries they had.
