A Michigan man who stayed true to his morning routine of buying coffee and a lottery ticket was pleasantly surprised by a whopping $300,000 windfall.

The lottery winner initially thought he won only $30,000

Earlier this week, the Michigan Lottery confirmed that a 56-year-old lottery player from Wayne County, who chose to remain anonymous, scored one of the top prizes from one of its popular lottery games.

Speaking to Lottery officials, the lucky man said that just like every morning, he stopped by a gas station to buy his morning coffee along with an instant ticket.

The fortunate lottery player said that this was exactly what he had done every day for the past eight years.

However, his latest ticket Make It Rein instant ticket purchase at the Speedway gas station on 37416 7 Mile Road in Livonia brought him a life-changing prize.

After buying the lottery ticket, the man returned to his car to scratch it off.

Initially, the Wayne County man thought he won $30,000.

He returned to the gas station and asked a clerk to check the ticket. This is when the 56-year-old player was shocked to realize that he didn't scratch off all the zeros, meaning that he won $300,000, one of the game's top prizes.

"That’s when I realized I’d actually won $300,000. I couldn’t believe it," the lucky winner said.

The Wayne County lottery winner visited the Lottery headquarters to claim his prize.

When asked if he had any plans about the winnings, the 56-year-old man said that he intends to put some of the winnings in his children's college funds.

The lucky winner also said he plans to buy a new car while investing what's left of the lottery windfall.

One top prize remains in play from Make It Rein

The Michigan Lottery's Make It Rein instant game launched back in October.

Since the launch of the game, more than $4 million in prizes have been won by players across the state.

The cost per ticket is $5 and each play grants a chance for a prize between $5 and $300,000.

After the recent win, only one top prize of $300,000 remains in play.

On the bright side, a tier-two prize awards $2,000 and there are seven such remaining in play.

The odds of winning any prize from Make It Rein are 1 in 3.94.
