An incredibly fortunate lottery player in North Carolina is planning house renovations after scoring a six-figure win from a $5 scratch-off ticket.
On Monday, the North Carolina Education Lottery confirmed in a press release that one Greensboro resident scored a top prize from its popular Holiday Cash 50X scratch-off ticket.
The lucky winner's name is Danny Johnson Jr., and he purchased the ticket with the win from the High Point BP on Greensboro Road in High Point.
The odds of winning the top prize from the Holiday Cash 50X ticket are 1 in 1,165,425.
Still, this was Johnson's lucky day as his ticket scored one of the top prizes for a sweet $150,000 payday.
Speaking to Lottery officials, the fortunate man said: "I cracked a smile when I first saw it (the win). But I tried to keep it cool."
Remembering the excitement that came with the win, the man added: "I wanted to holler but I knew better."
Not much time passed since Johnson's win on Friday and his visit to the Lottery headquarters on Monday when he claimed his prize.
After the applicable state and federal taxes, the Greensboro resident's bank account grew by $107,251.
When asked if he has plans for the windfall, the lucky lottery player said: "My house has needed a lot of work for years."
In addition, the fortunate player acknowledged that the scratch-off win was life-changing.
The North Carolina Education Lottery's Holiday Cash 50X scratch-off ticket was released less than a month ago, on November 5, 2024.
Still, Johnson's $150,000 prize win marked the second top prize win and now only two such prizes remain in play.
The lucky Greensboro resident said that he likes to try new scratch-off tickets. Undoubtedly, this one brought him great fortune, considering the unexpected windfall.
With a cost of $5 per ticket, Holiday Cash 50X grants players a chance to win a prize between $5 and $150,000.
A tier-two prize awards $10,000 and the odds of winning such a prize are 1 in 776,950. While at the launch of Holiday Cash 50X there were a total of six prizes of $10,000 each, now, only two remain in play.
The overall odds of winning any prize from the Lottery's popular holiday-themed ticket are 1 in 4.18.
