MGM Resorts International, the leading gaming, hospitality and entertainment company, hit a major milestone in its renewable energy strategy.
On Tuesday, the company confirmed that now, 100% of its daytime electricity needs for its Las Vegas Strip properties are powered by renewable energy.
In September 2024, MGM Resorts teamed up with Escape Solar LLC, complementing its renewable energy capabilities.
Per the 25-year power purchase agreement signed between the duo, the former confirmed its plan to extend the production coverage of renewable energy to up to 100% of its Las Vegas properties' daytime needs.
Last month, the company completed the Escape Solar and Storage Project located in Lincoln County, Nevada.
This enabled MGM Resorts to access 115 MW of solar energy and 400 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage, powering up to 100% of the company's daytime electricity needs of its Las Vegas Strip resorts with solar energy.
Considering that MGM Resorts operates large-scale hotels and casino resorts, renewable energy represents an important aspect of its plan to lower long-term energy costs and decrease exposure to energy price volatility.
The company has made significant reductions in its carbon emissions thanks to investments in renewable energy projects since 2016.
Bill Hornbuckle, MGM Resorts' CEO and President, spoke with excitement about the latest sustainability achievement, Casino Guru News learned from a press release.
"With this new project coming online, we are accelerating progress toward our goal of using 100% renewable electricity domestically by 2030," he said.
Moreover, Hornbuckle pointed out: "Together with our Mega Solar Array, the new Escape Solar and Storage Project reflects our focus on scalable, impactful clean-energy solutions."
In conclusion, the executive highlighted that the achievement is a testament that the gaming and hospitality industry can operate sustainably while delivering long-term cost stability.
