A fortunate couple from New York recently claimed a tier-two prize from the popular lottery game, Mega Millions, splitting a sweet $2m prize.
The couple from Massapequa in Nassau County purchased their winning ticket from Manya Card and Gifts at 1250C Hicksville Rd in Seaford, the New York Lottery announced earlier this week.
The pair was able to match all white balls for a tier-two prize.
While usually, such a prize would be $1m, changes to Mega Millions announced earlier this year brought a random multiplier assigned at each ticket purchase.
As a result, the Nassau County couple won $2m, thanks to the 2x multiplier assigned for the Mega Millions drawing on April 15.
At the time, the winning numbers were 06, 10, 13, 24, 63 while the Mega Ball was 02.
A statement from the New York Lottery reveals: "The pair was able to double the standard $1,000,000 Mega Millions second prize thanks to the individual Multiplier (2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x) randomly assigned to each play at the time of purchase."
Recently, the couple visited the Lottery to claim their big win.
They chose to split the $2m prize evenly between each other and each received a one-time lump cash sum of $651,000 after the relevant withholdings.
The fortunate couple did not disclose what plans they have for their newfound fortune.
Near the end of last month, a single lucky ticket holder in Virginia won the jackpot from Mega Millions.
At the time, the top prize was an estimated $348m or $155.5m in cash.
During the latest Mega Millions draw on Tuesday, the top prize survived as nobody matched correctly all white balls along with the gold Mega Ball.
Had someone matched correctly all winning numbers from the latest draw, they'd be looking at a prize of $130m or $57.5m cash option.
Surprisingly, on Tuesday, nobody matched five white balls for a tier-two prize from Mega Millions.
The next drawing for the popular game is scheduled for Friday, August 1, 2025.
The jackpot, if won on the next drawing, is an estimated $140m or $62.0m if the person selects the cash option.
