Undoubtedly, every lottery player is excited when winning a prize, regardless of its size.
But while purchasing a ticket and expecting a win is one thing, winning a prize unknowingly brings an entirely different level of excitement.
In one such peculiar case, a 63-year-old man from Oakland County, Michigan, who chose to remain anonymous, was pleasantly surprised by a sweet $100,000 second chance prize.
The six-figure win was truly surprising since the 63-year-old man wasn't aware that he entered a second chance draw after scanning a $300,000,000 Extraordinaire ticket that had no win, a statement released by the Michigan Lottery reveals.
The aforementioned ticket is among the scratch-off games offered by the Lottery that are eligible for a second chance win of $100,000.
To enter the second chance drawing, players need to scan their non-winning $300,000,000 Extraordinaire tickets with the Lottery's mobile app ticket scanner.
The second chance drawings will continue through May 2, 2025, and there will be nine more drawings.
On each second chance drawing, two prizes of $100,000 each are awarded.
Recently, the fortunate 63-year-old player visited the Michigan Lottery headquarters in Lansing to claim his prize.
The Oakland County man was asked what he planned to do with the unexpected windfall and explained that he wanted to save the prize and use some of it to help others.
Sharing his excitement, the lucky player said: "This all still feels so unbelievable. I never imagined I'd be making this type of trip to Lansing!"
The Oakland County man confirmed that he scanned his $300,000,000 Extraordinaire tickets to check if they had a win or not but was clueless that scanning non-winning tickets entered him into a second chance draw.
The lucky winner added: "I got a call from the Lottery telling me I'd won $100,000 in the second chance drawing and I said: 'You're kidding me, right?' It seemed too good to be true."
The man admitted to checking his email the next day only to find a notification that landed in his spam folder. This is when the 63-year-old man realized that the win was for real and not just a scam.
The Michigan Lottery's $300,000,000 Extraordinaire ticket costs $50 per play.
At the launch of the game, there were a total of 2,705,045 prizes, including three grand prizes of $6m each, as well as 81 second-tier prizes of $50,000 each.
While none of the top prizes have been won so far and all three remain in play, 74 prizes of $50,000 each remain up for grabs.
The overall odds of winning a prize from the Michigan Lottery's $300,000,000 Extraordinaire ticket are 1 in 3.10.
