The UK National Lottery has revealed an exciting piece of news, confirming that a single ticket has scooped the £7.2m jackpot by matching all six numbers plus the bonus ball and claiming the prize all to themselves.
The player is still anonymous and has not stepped forward to claim their reward. With the draw taking place on Saturday, there is still plenty of time for the person to do so.
In the meantime, the National Lottery has issued a press statement congratulating the enigmatic person, but also urging players to check their tickets.
The winning numbers of the draw were 9, 19, 22, 41, 55, and 58, and 44 as the bonus number. No person managed to match five numbers and the bonus ball to win an equally eye-watering £1m.
The lottery is a big business in the United Kingdom, with the country having its fair share of winners that have been grabbing headlines. Earlier this year in May, one lucky soul claimed a £10.4m jackpot from the National Lottery, although they too have chosen to remain anonymous.
At the beginning of July, another Brit secured a massive payday from the Euro Millions lottery, scooping up as much as £33m. In the meantime, people in the United Kingdom continue to spend substantial amounts on the lottery. By one estimate, the average spending per person has hit £416.
Big jackpots in the UK, the likes of the Powerball and Mega Millions games in the United States are pointedly less common, but the country nevertheless has a robust ecosystem built around the lottery.
Allwyn Group has recently acquired the rights to the National Lottery, promising to spearhead a new era in its operations, after Camelot lost a public tender to extend is tenure.
