The Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk, a chronic social media poster and former President Donald Trump lieutenant, has announced on social media that it has begun ferrying travelers to the Harry Reid International Airport.

The Boring Company is now dropping off passengers at Las Vegas’ airport, as part of a pilot phase

The company operates an underground tubular system of roads that are supposed to circumvent traffic and ensure smooth traveling time for passengers, preferably hitching a ride on a Tesla.

The newly-launched service, which got underway on Tuesday, December 30, is the first time that The Boring Company has been allowed to access airport property, with a happy traveler posing for a photo-op.

These are just pilot stages of the project, as it has a much bigger ambition to scale well across the city and kick off in earnest. Presently, The Boring Company is allowed to ferry people between 10 am and 9 pm, but this only covers drop-offs.

Pick-ups are not yet allowed. The Vegas Loop, as the underground system is known, can drop people off at terminals 1 or 3, for the time being, and travelers may hitch a ride presently from Resorts World and Westgate stations.

While slightly restrictive, the fare is $12, ahead of the city’s taxis, which could charge as much as triple that amount.

Originally, the Vegas Loop wanted to connect travelers underground all the way, but a temporary regulatory approval has been granted to allow cars servicing the tunnels to exit and travel on the surface as well, provided that there was at least 4 miles of underground travel.

Eventually, the Vegas Loop would run fully underground, including dropping passengers off at the airport, while also picking them up. In the meantime, The Boring Company continues to develop its infrastructure, with a University Center Loop now being finalized.

Overcoming limitations of surface travel by channeling everything through the Vegas Loop

This would add more stations at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, as well as UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center, the Sphere, and the Howard Hughes Center.

The Boring Company is hoping to provide swift rides around the city for tourists at reduced costs, giving an economic boost to Sin City and saving up time in traffic.

At the same time, The Boring Company has come under heavy criticism over the construction of its tunnels, with investigators looking into claims that it dumped drilling fluids into Las Vegas manholes.
