A lottery player in Maryland saw the billion-dollar Powerball jackpot and decided to give the game a try.
While the Montgomery County man's tickets did not hit the $1.4bn jackpot earlier this month, he scored a five-figure tier-three prize, the Maryland Lottery announced Wednesday.
The man, who chose to remain anonymous, purchased tickets for Powerball's drawing on September 3, 2025.
He bought his winning ticket at the Germantown Shoppers located at 18066 Mateny Road in Montgomery County.
Winning numbers 3, 16, 29, 61, 69 and Powerball number 9 were drawn on this particular drawing.
Lucky for the Montgomery County man, he matched four winning numbers and won a life-enhancing $50,000 prize.
The fortunate man holds one out of a total of four tier-three prize winning tickets, with each entitled to $50,000.
While the lucky man claimed his sweet fortune, three tickets, one in Dundalk, Laurel and Temple Hills, each winning $50,000 are yet to be claimed.
Moreover, a tier-two prize of $1m from the Powerball drawing from September 3, 2025, is also yet to be claimed.
The $1m winning ticket was sold in Pikesville, the Maryland Lottery said.
The fortunate winner spoke to a Maryland Lottery official and said: "It’s a strange feeling winning this type of money. I can only imagine what it would be like to win the jackpot."
The winner admitted that after the September 3 Powerball drawing, he saw a social media post that said there were four winners with each entitled $50,000 from that particular draw.
Checking his Powerball ticket, the man was pleasantly surprised by the $50,000 prize.
"I’m an infrequent player, but I try to play once a month, or when the jackpot grows," the Montgomery County man said.
Asked about his plans for his newfound fortune, the lucky winner admitted that he will consider investing the windfall.
On Saturday, the mind-blowing $1.79bn Powerball jackpot was won after tickets in Missouri and Texas matched all winning numbers.
The jackpot has gone down as the second largest in the history of the game, surpassed only by the astronomical $2.04bn jackpot won in California on November 7, 2022.
