There is hardly a person online who has not come across, or at least heard others discuss, Hailey Welch, a Tennessee resident, who is better known by her netizen-christened name "Hawk Tuah Girl." Welch became famous for her spontaneous and vivacious remarks that brought her what some detractors begrudge "15 seconds of fame."
However, Welch seems to be making good use of her time in the spotlight, brief as it has been, by already having filed several trademarks, and eyeing potential ventures, among which are a BBQ sauce operation and notably, a sports betting business aptly called "Bet on That Thang," registered by her company 16 Minutes LLC, a clever dig at people who have been dismissing her for her "15 minutes" of fame.
In case you do not who Welch is, she rose to Internet stardom after Tim & Dee TV, a YouTube channel, met her randomly in the streets of Nashville and asked her what the one thing was that a woman could do during a sexual intercourse with a guy that would drive him completely "mad" (in a good way).
Welch did not have to think twice and jumped to the opportunity, joking with zest and brio that you "got to just go hawk tuah on that thang," hence the idiosyncratic name of her pitched sports betting venture. A quick check with the US Patent and Trademark Office suggests that Bet on That Thang trademark registration is:
"…intended to cover the categories of sports betting services; Wagering services; Arranging of contests featuring casino gaming; Entertainment services, namely, casino gaming."
Branching out into sports betting has been an interesting choice for Welch, who is not guaranteed to launch such an enterprise in the first place. For one, the entry-level could be quite steep, but it’s not yet clear if she is collaborating with people from the industry.
Many sportsbooks have started out as references to popular culture, although they have not admittedly been very successful. The good news is that younger generations, especially men, have found the Hawk Tuah Girl to be cool, even if some netizens have grown weary of her name circulating.
For example, she recently appeared at the Rock the South country music festival on-stage with fans suffering the odd and forced encounter in excruciating silence.
Regardless, Hawk Tuah Girl has been part of the news cycle and although her off-the-cusp remark on that YouTube channel would not suggest that she was after fame, her subsequent behavior clearly shows that she has been keen to capitalize on what her critics have simmered was "15 seconds of fame."
Hawk Tuah Girl, though, is all over the place. Her sports betting and BBQ sauce ventures are a few of the options she is currently exploring. She was recently paid $30,000 to judge a bikini contest and she has also signed a contract with Penthouse.
Yet, for her sports betting venture to materialize, Hawk Tuah Girl would need to act with a much deeper understanding of the industry and overcome its tough entry costs. Do not put your money on "Bet On That Thang" to be up and running in time for the NFL season - if at all.
