Canadian rapper Drake has been frequently in the news. When it comes to his gambling habits, he has been ribbed about the infamous "Drake curse," an Internet reference to the artist’s trend to bet big money on losing outcomes.
However, this is not how Drake sees it. He has recently become aware of the meme humor about him. Drake has called himself one of the most daring sports bettors out there and said that his betting style might have cost him eye-watering sums, but it has also made him win big amounts.
Although he is often the talk of betting town in slightly comical terms, the rapper has known many great wins as well. This was not the case in the recently concluded US Open where Drake bet Taylor Fritz to defeat the favorite, Jannik Sinner, and shared the post on Instagram
Drake simply said that he was going to go underdog, plonking down $210,000 on Fritz, who was given 3.85 oddsto win and was a long favorite. However, Drake’s potential payout would have fetched him $808,500.
However, Fritz didn’t put up much of a fight, losing to Sinner with 6-3, 6-4, and 7-5. Of course, the Internet was obliging touting Drake’s curse once again as the thing that has deprived Fritz of his title.
There though is not much credible evidence that the curse exists. Drake could be tangibly blamed for some of the losses of athletes, certainly.
He tends to get overfond of athletes and rings them up to inform them that he is betting on them to win a mixed martial arts bout, for example, which could realistically add unnecessary stress to performance.
Earlier this year, Drake bet against Argentina to lose the Copa America game against Canada. Fans responded by jeering at the rapper with a "not like us" caption on a photo of the victorious Argentinian soccer team.
The reference, "not like us," is made to a song by Kendrick Lamar who has been beefing with Drake and has called him a gambling addict.
However, do not be too easily convinced that Drake is a systematic loser. If anything, one Twitter user made up a statistic that Drake had lost obscene amounts – which was disproved easily by the same user who said that they had drafted the stats in jest.
