In our latest webinar, All Things Gambling: The Lessons the US Can Learn from the Changing Regulatory Climate in Europe, we take a harder look at the constantly evolving regulatory landscape in the US and Europe, with Martin Lyčka, SVP American Regulatory Affairs and Responsible Gambling at Entain and Alan Feldman, Distinguished Fellow, Responsible Gaming at UNLV International Gaming Institute, who sit with our hostess, Denisa Vydumova, to discuss what indeed the burgeoning US market can take away from the tectonic shifts in Europe.
Feldman explains that the industry and its regulation should not necessarily be looked at as a homogenous thing, as there are many different verticals to it, and they all pose their unique challenges and need to be approached on a per-case basis. The reality is that while there is an increased interest in gambling, and it’s definitely growing, these growth moments in the industry would necessarily be followed by regulatory scrutiny.
The conversation covers a range of topics from player protection to duties that can be applied to gambling businesses and forwarded towards consumer protection measures. As Lycka notes, there is a significant cultural difference between Europe and the United States, which delineates a certain specificity in how the industries are regulated in both regions. Still, there is room for the federal government to address and create support for mental health as the industry grows, for one, among other interesting interventions that lawmakers can carry out.
The conversation touches on a range of topics from Consumer Acquisition vs. Safety, Understanding Problem Gambling, Transatlantic Regulatory Collaboration, and naturally a sobering overview of the two distinctly different landscapes in Europe and the United States respectively.
