WorldGaming’s Safer Gaming Charity Partner, Gamble-Pause, has launched the first Pan-African gambling blocking application, responding to growing demand for a solution that helps protect consumers in the region at scale.
Called the Gamble-Pause App, the solution is intended to be easy to use and to deliver effective results, helping protect African communities, and specifically vulnerable consumers who may be struggling to control their habit.
The app is designed to provide what the organization describes as a "powerful, practical and accessible solution for individuals" who seek to control their gambling habits and shield themselves against the potential adverse ramifications of gambling-related behaviors.
Commenting on the launch of the app, Gamble-Pause Founder Ladipo Abiose Akolade had this to say:
"Unlike traditional self-exclusion programs that are limited to individual operators or jurisdictions, the Gamble-Pause App introduces the Pan-African Guard — a comprehensive protection system designed to work across multiple gambling environments."
The app is designed to enable users to voluntarily exclude themselves from gambling platforms, including both licensed operators as well as offshore websites, for a minimum period of one year. The app is also designed with future-proofing in mind, as noted by Akolade:
"A dedicated intelligence system continuously identifies and updates a database of unlicensed and black-market gambling operators, helping users avoid platforms that often operate outside regulatory oversight."
Notably, the app is also built to restrict access to prediction markets and related platforms.
This is an important decision as it protects consumers from potential harm, even though prediction markets still operate in a relative grey area when it comes to their legality, and whether they constitute gambling in the first place.
Another feature of the Gamble-Pause App is that it empowers users to also actively contribute to and expand the app’s capabilities. The simplest example is that users can report offshore or unregulated operators, and thus add them to the database, and help further shield players.
However, the Gamble-Pause App is designed with a deeper understanding of how problem gamblers behave, and does not stop at simply prohibiting access to gambling platforms. Rather, it moves past this and also seeks to support an individual’s long-term recovery and behavior change, promoting healthier financial habits overall and more.
The app also seeks to encourage positive behavior, such as streak tracking, achievement badges, milestone rewards that are tied into a community, and more. More importantly, the app is designed with accessibility in mind, supporting more than 40 African languages. The app also recognizes that gambling addiction is more than a simple financial issue, and a problem that impacts mental health, relationships, and overall wellbeing.
"Many mobile applications lose effectiveness when phones enter battery-saving modes or background restrictions are applied. To address this, the Gamble-Pause development team has specifically optimized the application to continue operating effectively in the background while minimizing device impact. This ensures continuous protection without disrupting everyday phone use," Akolade explained.
"As the first Pan-African gambling blocking application of its kind, Gamble-Pause represents an important step forward in responsible gambling and harm prevention. For anyone looking to take control of their gambling, protect a loved one, or simply create healthier digital habits, the Gamble-Pause App offers a practical and powerful solution designed specifically for Africa," he wrapped up.
