Denmark is one of the European countries that currently offers a wide range of gambling activities.

From retail casino gambling to betting and online casinos, Denmark has it all.

Earlier this week the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, released new data, highlighting a growth in gambling spend among Danes for the month of June.

Notably, the spending increased within a range of gambling activities, including online casino gambling, sports betting and land-based casinos.

Overall, the gross gaming revenue (GGR) for June hit DKK 703m or $102.6m.

When compared year-over-year to the result from June 2023, the latest figure represents an increase of 37%.

"The overall increase in the period is mainly driven by an increase in the gambling spend of bets, although it should be noted that the repayment proportion for bets was lower in June 2024 compared to June 2023," as explained by Spillemyndigheden.

Spillemyndigheden provides a breakdown of the total GGR in June

A breakdown of the DKK 703m ($102.6m) in total GGR shows that online casino gambling was responsible for the lion's share of the revenue.

In total, the online casino revenue for June hit DKK 303m ($44.3m). This figure represented a share of 43.03% of the total GGR for the month.

On the other hand, sports betting was the gambling activity with the second-highest GGR in June.

In total, betting's share was 38.59%, considering the activity brought DKK 271m ($39.6 million).

The revenue reported from gambling machines also marked an increase in June.

In total, the revenue from that gambling activity hit DKK 97m ($14.2m) and its share of the total was 13.76%.

Last but not least, land-based casino gambling revenue increased in June when compared to the same period last year.

The land-based casino revenue represented just above 4.6% of the total GGR considering the DKK 32m ($4.7m) that was reported.

Gambling helpline calls mark a year-over-year decrease

While the revenue reported by all forms of gambling activities marked an increase, the number of calls to StopSpillet, the gambling regulator's helpline, marked a decrease.

In June 2023, there were a total of 50 gambling-related calls to StopSpillet.

This June, the number of calls decreased to 32. A majority of the calls or 50% were with a player, while 43.8% of the calls were with a relative of a gambler.

Besides data about the number of calls, Spillemyndigheden disclosed information regarding the number of self-excluded individuals via its program, ROFUS.

The total number of self-exclusion program registrations of Danes as of June 2024 was 50,403.

The aforementioned figure breaks down to 33,511 gamblers who have self-excluded permanently and 16,892 who have self-excluded temporarily.
