The only federally recognized Indian Tribe in the state of Alabama, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, confirmed that its authority and recognizable hospitality company, Wind Creek Hospitality, entered into an agreement with the McGregor family.
Under the terms of the new agreement, the latter agreed to sell its Birmingham Racecourse and Casino and Victoryland Casino to Wind Creek Hospitality.
Recognized as a popular gaming and entertainment destination, Birmingham Racecourse is located at 1000 John Rogers Dr in Birmingham.
The acquisition, which is expected to be finalized early next year, is expected to help transform the venue into a premier entertainment destination for the Southeast.
Despite the overhaul and improvements at Birmingham Racecourse, Wind Creek confirmed that the venue will continue to offer historical horse racing and parimutuel games.
Based in Atmore, Wind Creek is a fast-growing hospitality and gaming company that has ambitious plans to continue expanding.
Complementing the progress the company has made in recent years, Birmingham Racecourse will now be among its growth initiatives in focus.
Upon announcing the acquisition of the racecourse and casino, Wind Creek confirmed that it plans to collaborate with racing officials and politicians in the area in the days close to the completion of the sale.
Jay Dorris, Wind Creek Hospitality's President and CEO, spoke about the excitement the acquisition of the Birmingham Racecourse brings to the company.
Additionally, the executive pointed to the dedication and investment the McGregor family put into the popular racing and gaming destination for years.
"Over those years, it became clear to us that we share many of the same goals - providing great entertainment, attracting tourism and creating economic growth In Alabama," Dorris added, a press release reveals.
Finally, he explained: "We are really looking forward to welcoming their employees and to moving forward together."
Stephanie Bryan, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians' Tribal Chair and CEO, was equally as excited.
She explained that over the years, the Tribe retained its focus on investing in the Birmingham area and providing vital support for organizations such as the Birmingham Zoo and the Birmingham Promise, among others.
Bryan reiterated Wind Creek's plans to make Birmingham Racecourse a go-to gaming destination that would generate more taxes, provide much-needed support to local communities and create new jobs.
Lewis Benefield, the President of the Birmingham Racecourse and VictoryLand added: "For over 30 years, we have worked to provide the best possible experience for our customers and employees, while generating significant tax revenue for the state of Alabama and local charities."
The executive also pointed to the hundreds of millions of dollars the two venues helped raise, benefiting different initiatives across the state.
