William Hill has been in a mess for several days, which was caused by a system malfunction, resulting in the Jackpot Drop game mistakenly paying out millions worth of pounds to players.
The casino soon found out that an error had caused the payouts, and took immediate action - locking accounts while reportedly reaching out to customers and asking them to return any amounts that they had withdrawn in the meantime.
The incident has been confirmed by an Evoke spokesperson, who said that the issue affecting the Jackpot Drop game was flagged, with incorrect sums credited to players’ balances as a result.
"While we quickly identified and resolved this issue, for a short period of time, funds were erroneously credited to some customer accounts that were not correctly generated through valid or properly functioning gameplay," the spokesperson said.
At least one user is said to have won at least six figures, while most other players won tens of thousands, with the exact amount not specified.
Reporting on the news, Racing Post, a British media outlet specializing in horse racing, detailed the fallout, with an unverified but significant number of players able to cash out their rewards.
William Hill should supposedly have the high ground here, as the terms and conditions of online casinos clearly state that wins that result from a malfunction are immediately forfeited by account holders, but the fact that users were able to cash out their funds in droves means that William Hill would now have to expand a significant legal effort to restore its funds.
The company has already contacted the "relevant customers to clarify the issue" and the company confirmed that it was in the process of retrieving its funds, pointing out the validity of the terms and conditions.
According to Next.io, a gambling media outlet, which saw an email sent to William Hill users, the company has sought to offer players a more amicable resolution of the case, granting them 11% of what they had cashed out of their accounts in exchange for returning the remainder.
