  • The quarterback battled the NCAA in court over his eligibility before ultimately ending his college career by dropping his claim
  • Despite the controversy, Sorsby is now pursuing an NFL opportunity through the supplemental draft, and will be working out in front of scouts soon

Brendan Sorsby’s name has circulated in the media for a while now, and it is not always come down to the quarterback’s college football prowess.

Sorsby’s name has been embroiled in one of the most serious scandals the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has faced recently, with the player admitting to placing over $90,000 worth of wagers on college and professional sports.

This has led to a torrent of criticism, court battles, and many college athletics insiders flabbergasted at the current outcomes. Today we take a look at who Brendan Sorsby is, why he transferred to the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and what the legal fuss surrounding him is.

Who is Brendan Sorsby?

Born January 20, 2004, Brendan Sorsby is an American football quarterback who is currently playing his last eligible season in college and is set to debut for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Aged 22 as of the time of writing, Sorsby has cycled through several college football teams, including Indiana University Bloomington, where he appeared in a game in 2022 and completed three of six passing attempts against Penn State. He is also said to have wagered on the university’s games at the time while redshirting.

In 2023, he was the starting quarterback and completed eight out of 16 passing attempts for 58 yards againstOhio State. Sorsby was eventually replaced by Tayven Jackson by the third game into the season but was then called back as the starting quarterback in the seventh game.

Then, at the end of the year, he transferred to the University of Cincinnati, his second team at that point in his college career, where he spent 2024 as the team’s starting quarterback and entered a new transfer window in December 2025.

He eventually made his way to Texas Tech University and the Red Raiders on January 4, 2026, where he played and later checked in for rehab. He has faced intense scrutiny and several lawsuits. Shortly after leaving Cincinnati, the university filed a lawsuit in federal court in February 2026, alleging that the player had breached his NIL contract.

The lawsuit, filed with the US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, seeks $1m in liquidated damages, which the player was contractually obligated to pay within 30 days of transferring to a new team.

Sorsby gambling scandal - what has this all been about?

Since transferring to Texas Tech, Sorsby has faced multiple challenges imperilling his last season as a football player, and while recent developments have ended his career, presumably by choice, the past few months have been a rollercoaster for the player.

Notably, Sorsby admitted to wagering more than $90,000 on college and professional sports, using friends to do so, while also placing wagers himself. He even bet on teams while he was with the Hoosiers.

This began a cascade of personal challenges for the player, who, on April 27, 2026, took responsibility for his actions and checked into rehab for sports gambling and would later admit to having placed thousands of bets on various events.

What followed was a swift enforcement action by the NCAA, which on May 18 ruled that Sorsby was not eligible to play in the collegiate season, effectively ending his career on the collegiate level.

On May 26, Sorsby’s request to be reinstated as a college football player was denied by the NCAA, and he opened up about his gambling habit a few days later.

He detailed how he placed wagers, including while on his own team, although the player doubled down that he has never taken advantage of his knowledge, but rather used gambling as a way to stay connected with the team.

An appeal on June 5, 2026, was also denied by the NCAA, which prompted Sorsby to lawyer up himself, and he won an injunction against the NCAA’s ruling, with a Texas judge granting Sorsby the right to continue playing.

The fallout was immediate, with college officials furious with the decision, and many prominent college insiders questioning what this would mean as precedent for other players.

The NCAA immediately sought to resolve matters in court, insisting that Sorsby ought not be eligible to play. Texas Tech continued to support the player, arguing that gambling addiction was something that college bodies ought to help overcome not punish.

Sorsby drops lawsuit against NCAA, ends college career

Then, on June 18, 2026, Sorsby dropped his lawsuit against the NCAA, effectively rendering himself ineligible to participate in the college season again. This came shortly after Texas Tech had a change of heart and also confirmed that the player won’t be playing in the fall.

The decision was not made over Sorsby’s shoulder, however, with Texas Tech Chairman Cody Campbell publishing a letter in which he confirmed that the player will indeed not be appearing on the roster, but the decision was made jointly with Sorsby and his family, and in light of the pending legal proceedings.

The motion to dismiss was filed with the 99th District Court in Lubbock County. This essentially ends the college football drama that surrounded Brendan Sorsby, a talented quarterback whose gambling habit ultimately got the better of him.

However, Sorsby is not done with pursuing his football dream either, and he will make an attempt to join the NFL.

Sorsby seeks a place among NFL teams following recent events

He realized that his college career would not do him any credit and would continue to be a source of controversy that could have further harmed his chances of securing a spot in the NFL.

He is now officially applying for the NFL supplemental draft, which is a process that has not been initiated since 2023 and carries its own challenges. Sorsby is a talented quarterback, and he may be willing to accept a smaller salary in order to compete.

But before he can even do that, the NFL would have to weigh whether the player is actually eligible and should be allowed. The NCAAF controversy is certainly not going to help either. On the off chance that Sorsby is allowed in, then teams would have the opportunity to bid on him.

However, Sorsby has some reason for optimism as he is scheduled to work out in front of NFL scouts in Dallas, Texas on July 10, 2026.
