Pétanque is a fairly quiescent and low-key sport, and yet, it has recently become embroiled in a sprawling match-fixing scandal tied to some of its best-known faces, officials, and what is alleged to be a gambling syndicate.
French prosecutors have charged multiple players as well as sports officials over what they allege is a deliberate fixing of games during the 2025 Masters de Pétanque held in September 2026.
The ramifications are potentially serious as they involve Dylan Rocher and Henri Lacroix, who are easily recognized as the sport’s most talented players, and its most decorated ones, but they are hardly the only people to have been embroiled, with others, including Jean Feltain and David Doerr, also named by investigators.
As to the charges the people involved face, those range from match-fixing to money-laundering, as well as participating in organized fraud. Each of the people named in the probe could potentially be sent behind bars for up to five years and face a six-figure fine.
Legal proceedings will not commence before next year; however, with still enough time to prepare the case against the defendants and for them to muster a defense in response to the charges. No party has yet pleaded guilty or sought to strike a bargain with the prosecutor’s office.
Rocher and Lacroix are specifically accused of helping France 2 lose a game againstLevallois-Perret, which it should have won, with the loss tied to a €13,000 bets on the underdog, with the presumably weaker team winning the game 13-4.
According to investigators, the money was staked on Levallois-Perret and then fetched a considerable payout to the tune of €61,000.
