The Arizona Cardinals have shown their nous for drafting star-studded quarterbacks in the past, with Kyler Murray a clear example of that. However, the NFL Rookie of the Year (2019) has since moved to the Minnesota Vikings, after his career took a heavy turn, with the athlete suffering a series of injuries that prohibited him from actively participating in his team’s games.
Most recently in 2025, Murray could only take part in five games, which is why the upcoming NFL Draft is important for the Cardinals, who are now reportedly eyeing Garrett Nussmeier as Murray’s successor. The LSU prospect is among the favorites to become the Cardinals’ new quarterback, as per NFL.com’s Chad Reuter, with the athlete already clocking in some impressive stats.
Although his 2025 season came up to only 1,927 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with five interceptions, he is still a fantastic pick for any team in a position similar to that of Arizona. Nussmeier previously pulled off 4,052 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 2024, but an injury stopped him short of repeating this.
He was previously considered a first-round pick during the NFL Draft, but may now have to be related to day 2 or 3, which is all the same, as the athlete has the mettle to make a worthwhile Murray replacement. Nussmeier and Murray are two different types of players, with Murray able to adapt to situations quickly and make game-impacting decisions in split seconds.
While Nussmeier does not lack this inherently, he is a more premeditated type of player who plans out and executes a strategy that is based on carefully learned moves, and might fit better in the NFL’s evolving offensive strategy wisdom. Nussmeier would also not be left to learn the ropes alone, as he will receive mentorship from more seasoned players such as Gardner Minshew, who is also reportedly joining in, as well as Jacoby Brissett.
While Nussmeier’s pick is still only a speculation, it makes sense to add him to the Cardinals’ QB lineup, who would need a strong refresh. Hopefully, the rookie would not face the same series of injuries as Murray had.
