What are the odds of winning the lottery twice?

Winning the lottery once can be an uplifting event. Yet, winning the lottery per se happens more often than you think! Thanks to scratch games, frequent draws, and what is probably thousands of available games, people win from the lottery all the time.

However, the real intent behind the question "what are the odds of winning the lottery twice" is obviously different. It has to do with what your chances of winning a big amount from the lottery are, and the honest answer is: they are slim. Still, just because you have won big from the lottery once doesn’t mean you couldn’t do it again - it just makes it very unlikely!

Odds of Winning the Powerball and Mega Millions

To begin with, the odds of winning two of the most popular lottery games, the Powerball and Mega Millions, are so long that you are far more likely to be struck by lightning, or even a meteorite, or even get a royal flush in a game of poker.

The jackpot odds of the Powerball are 1 in 292.2m, and for the Mega Millions, they stand at 1 in 290.4m. To put things in perspective, if every US adult bought at least one ticket and played either of these games, no jackpot winner would still be guaranteed.

In fact, the Powerball’s record for a no-winning ticket was 45 drawings, compared to 38 for the Mega Millions, which only served to demonstrate how incredibly unlikely it is for anyone to win. This is why the lottery comes down to pure random chance, and nobody can realistically expect to win these two specific games in their lifetime.

Unlikely, though, does not mean that it hasn’t happened before.

Has Anyone Actually Won the Lottery Twice?

Many people have won the lottery twice, or even more times. In one instance, a three-time lottery winner cheekily suggested that aliens had given him the winning numbers. Admittedly, though, the man had played for much smaller prizes, and the fact that a frequent lottery winner has won multiple times is not in itself anything out of the ordinary.

Interestingly, the people who have won "twice" from games such as the Powerball and the Mega Millions have usually won in the same drawing, playing two tickets plain and simple.

But nobody has truly won the Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot more than once in the sense that they won in different drawings of the game. One particular outlier is a man from Colorado.

One Joe B. from Colorado also played two tickets and won two $1m Powerball prizes as a result. As you can see, however, neither player truly won big repeatedly, not because it is impossible but rather - improbable.

Why Someone "Winning Twice" Isn't as Rare as It Looks

As we have already discussed, winning the lottery twice is not in itself a particularly difficult thing to do. Many people, and frequent lottery players, win more than once, and even more.

A couple from Portsmouth, Virginia, did win multiple times, however, by playing different games. The couple won a Powerball drawing on March 12, 2014, and then scooped a win on the Pick 4 game, for another $50,000 on March 26, before winning another $1m from a scratch-off game on March 27.

Games such as scratch cards and many online lotteries, for example, will often feature thousands of prizes in a single drawing. This means that there are multiple winners out there all the time, winning varying amounts.

An important caveat is that such games are not particularly difficult to win in the first place. In fact, winning anything from a scratch card may have as high a chance as 1 in 3 or 1 in 5.

By this token, frequent lottery players are bound to accumulate multiple winning tickets, but the fact remains that the more worthwhile a reward, the less likely it is to actually win twice.

Does Winning Once Change Your Odds of Winning Again?

No, just because you have won once does not automatically mean that you suddenly have lower chances of winning a second time. It simply does not work this way, even though the gambler’s fallacy applies here. What this means is that people think that just because they have won once, they won’t win a second time.

The truth is that every time you play a ticket, you have the same odds, about 1 in 292 million when playing a game like the Powerball or Mega Millions. Why people feel skeptical about a second win is simple - odds for big prizes are very long, and as such, it is very unlikely that someone will win a huge jackpot twice in their lifetime.

But in terms of how the actualmaths behind winning works, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. You face the same chance of winning no matter how many times you play (or win).

Why hasn’t anyone tried to buy all tickets for a lottery draw and win?

Simply because of how many tickets you would have to buy. Both Powerball and Mega Millions would require more than 290m tickets to cover all possible combinations. It is unlikely for any group of people, however organized or resourceful, to buy all tickets.

However, this is not to say that a similar scheme hasn’t been tried. A gambling syndicate achieved something very similar, covering 99.3% of all possible combinations for the Lotto Texas game. The operation was led by Tasmanian gambler Zeljko Ranogajec and London bookmaker Bernard Marantelli,

Four locations in Texas printed out 26m tickets, leading to a $95m payout, which was reduced to $57.8m because of the lump-sum option, and about $20m after taxes for the people behind the initiative.

The story was pretty wild. The buyers convinced the Texas Lottery to lend them more printing machines, and did not cover all possible combinations, figuring that it would not be worth their while to "split" possible rewards with "popular numbers." However, there was about a one-in-ten chance that someone else might have won the prize, resulting in a net loss for the operation.

Does playing the lottery more often increase my chance of winning?

No, not at all. The lottery is a random event, and the odds for winning are fixed. Every instance of playing is an isolated event, and there is no cumulative aspect of it. Put simply, no matter how many tickets you bought for a draw, your chances of winning remain the same.

However, by buying more tickets per draw, you increase your chances of winning in that individual draw. If you bought 10 tickets, you would have about 10 in 290m chances to win the Powerball, for example.
