Snowy mountain towns now outperform America’s most famous landmarks.
Across the U.S., Christmas has become one of the most popular moments of the year to pop the question. To uncover the destinations most likely to deliver that picture-perfect "yes," we analyzed three years of December engagement activity across Instagram and TikTok (2022–2024), alongside Christmas-season travel demand and NOAA snowfall probability.
The results show a clear shift: snowy, atmospheric mountain towns are now overtaking traditional city landmarks, thanks to guaranteed winter scenery, rising search interest, and rapidly growing engagement content.
Aspen claims the top spot with near‑guaranteed December snow, strong growth in holiday engagement, and consistently high Christmas travel demand. Its mix of luxury lodges, alpine scenery, and reliable winter atmosphere makes it one of the most photogenic proposal settings in the country.
Lake Tahoe has surged in popularity, particularly among younger couples sharing video‑led content. With dramatic lake‑and‑mountain views and a high chance of a white Christmas, it performs strongly across every metric in the study.
Central Park remains one of America’s most iconic proposal locations. It leads the study in social activity scores, and Christmas travel intent for New York is unmatched. While snowfall is less predictable, its festive atmosphere secures its place in the top three.
Vail’s European‑style village, reliable snow, and steady growth in proposal‑related content make it one of the strongest winter destinations. Its walkable charm and upscale alpine feel place it just behind Central Park.
Times Square is the country’s most high‑energy proposal location, ranking extremely high for social engagement. Despite uncertain snow, its sheer popularity and Christmas tourism volume keep it firmly in the national top five.
McCall is the study’s most unexpected standout: a lakeside town of just 3,500 residents with some of the fastest‑growing Christmas travel interest. While it doesn’t match the raw proposal volume of major cities, its reliable snowfall, intimate charm, and unusually high proposal rate relative to visitor numbers make it a high‑intensity destination. For couples seeking an off‑the‑beaten‑path winter proposal, McCall is emerging as an increasingly popular choice.
Often called "America’s most Christmassy town," Leavenworth scores strongly on snow reliability and holiday search demand. Its Bavarian‑style architecture and festive atmosphere consistently drive high engagement each year.
With guaranteed snow, a historic downtown, and major ski‑resort appeal, Park City ranks highly across all indicators. It is especially popular with couples seeking scenic winter proposals.
Stowe delivers the quintessential New England Christmas aesthetic, with white churches, covered bridges, and reliable December snowfall. Its Christmas travel demand score is among the highest in the Northeast.
Georgetown ranks exceptionally high for holiday search demand, thanks to its historic charm, waterfront lights, and festive streets. Although snow is less reliable, it remains one of the most sought‑after city‑neighbourhood destinations for Christmas engagements.

While iconic destinations like Aspen, Central Park, and Times Square dominate the top of the list, several unexpected entries highlight how proposal trends are shifting across the U.S.:
McCall, Idaho (#6) – A lakeside town of just 3,500 residents, McCall shows some of the fastest‑growing Christmas travel interest in the dataset. Its reliable snowfall and high proposal rate relative to visitor numbers make it a standout high‑intensity destination.
Leavenworth, Washington (#7) – This Bavarian‑styled village has become one of the country’s most reliable Christmas proposal spots, combining guaranteed snow with a festival‑like atmosphere and steady engagement growth.
Rockefeller Center (#11) – Despite its global reputation as a holiday landmark, Rockefeller Center ranks just outside the top 10. Less reliable snow and diluted travel demand across New York’s many attractions play a role, but so do the high costs of festive experiences like ice skating, which may deter couples compared to other iconic New York hotspots.
Denver Botanic Gardens (#12) – Strong holiday travel demand and reliable snow push Denver into the top tier, showing how single sites can rival entire towns when festive appeal is concentrated.
Dyker Heights, New York (#16) – Famous for its extravagant light displays, Dyker Heights drives exceptional holiday search interest and stands out as one of the few urban neighborhoods to make the list.
Capitol Christmas Tree, Washington, DC (#19) – A nationally recognized landmark with high travel demand, the Capitol Tree draws proposal interest even without ski‑resort scenery or heavy social media activity.
The Christmas Proposal Index is based on three years of December data (2022–2024) and identifies the U.S. destinations with the strongest combination of proposal activity, festive appeal and winter atmosphere. Each destination’s score is built from three equally weighted components:
A composite measure of Instagram and TikTok posts mentioning proposals and related terms during December. Data was assessed for year-on-year growth, averaged across three years, and normalized to prevent larger cities from dominating simply due to higher visitor volume.
A December-specific Google Trends score showing how heavily each destination is searched for during the Christmas season. This reflects interest, tourism intent and general cultural relevance at Christmas.
Based on NOAA’s 30-year average December snowfall. Each destination was placed into one of four tiers:
• Highly likely snow
• Likely snow
• Possible snow
• Unlikely snow
Snow reliability boosts both visual appeal and the desirability of a location for winter proposals.
Because large cities naturally produce higher raw engagement and search volumes, all metrics were normalized to ensure fairness. This allows small towns (e.g., McCall, Stowe, Whitefish) to score competitively based on proposal intensity, not population size.
The Index treats big cities and small towns equally, comparing them on real proposal behaviour, Christmas travel interest and winter-scenery likelihood.
