Revealed through exclusive satellite imagery and winter-weather analysis.
If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into a real-life Christmas card, you’re not alone. Snow doesn’t just fall differently in some destinations - it settles earlier, stays brighter, and creates the kind of winter scenery that feels genuinely magical.
Most people assume a "white Christmas" depends on snowfall alone. But this study goes further. For the first time, we analysed satellite imagery to measure how bright and visually white snow appears in each location. Using true-color winter images from the Copernicus satellite programme, we evaluated the clarity and brightness of snow across North America.
Alongside this satellite analysis, we also gathered 10 years of Christmas Day weather data to understand how reliably snow settles and stays throughout December.
From this combined approach, Aspen, Colorado stands out as the whitest Christmas destination overall, offering the brightest, cleanest, and most consistently snowy festive conditions in the dataset.
A simple overview of how we found the whitest Christmas locations:
All values normalized and weighted to build the Whitest Christmas Index
(Full detailed methodology is included below.)
Aspen’s snow consistently appears among the brightest in the satellite imagery, with early-season snowfall that settles and remains clean throughout December. This combination creates the whitest festive landscape of all locations analysed.
South Lake Tahoe maintains crisp, long-lasting snow thanks to cold, dry mountain conditions. This keeps snow bright and clear throughout December.
Bozeman’s early-settling snow, supported by reliably cold winter temperatures, stays bright and intact through the festive period.
High elevation produces clean, dry snow that scores highly for whiteness in satellite readings, even in years with lighter snowfall.
Timmins is Canada’s whitest Christmas destination, with some of the brightest snow seen in satellite imagery and consistently strong festive-season snow cover.
Goose Bay’s long, cold winters produce deep, bright snow that remains visible and clean from above, contributing to its high whiteness ranking.
Park City offers stable winter conditions that allow snow to settle and stay bright through December, making it a dependable white-Christmas location.
Salt Lake City combines regular early-winter snowfall with bright, clear snow surfaces, enhancing its festive atmosphere.
With high-altitude, dry powder that stays clean and bright, Mammoth Lakes ranks among the whitest mountain destinations.
Bismarck’s cold climate allows snow to settle early and remain white throughout December, giving the city dependable festive snow cover.

To identify the whitest Christmas destinations, we used a combination of satellite imagery and historical weather data.
Downloaded from Copernicus Browser using the true color layer at 300m scale
Only December images were used, selecting the closest available date to 25 December
Images were checked using the scene classification map to confirm snow
To measure how white the snow actually looked:
Five random point samples were taken from snowy areas using Photoshop
RGB values averaged for each year
Annual averages combined into a final RGB value
Delta-E calculated using the ColorMine.org CIE76 algorithm
Lower Delta-E = whiter, brighter snow
Using the Visual Crossing API, we collected:
From this, we calculated:
All values were normalized using min–max scaling.
Weightings:
60%: Delta-E (snow brightness)
20%: Chance of Christmas Day snow
10%: Christmas Day snowfall
10%: Christmas Day snow depth
Scores were combined to create the Whitest Christmas Index (0–100).
