Not surprisingly, Nevada stands out with the most casinos in the United States. The Silver State is synonymous with casino gambling, and despite a fairly small population overall of just over 3.2m people, the state is a clear leader when it comes to the total number of casinos it hosts.

There are 232 licensed casino properties in Nevada as of today. Nevada also has the highest casino count per 100,000 inhabitants - 7. The gambling industry as a whole supports 330,074 jobs locally, with the casinos alone generating $15.12bn in gross gaming revenue and contributing $1.20bn in gaming taxes.

One interesting fact when looking for how many casinos are in the United States is the fact that most states have very few casinos per 100,000 inhabitants, usually fewer than 1.

The only states to have more than one casino are Nevada (7), South Dakota (3.7), Oklahoma (3.48), North Dakota (1.38), Montana (1.27), and New Mexico (1.22). Mississippi almost hits this threshold with (0.98) casinos per 100,000 inhabitants.

What state has the fewest casinos?

Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Alaska are each tied and have only two land-based casinos. There are a handful of other states that also have three casinos, with Texas, a state with a population of 20,000,000, also only offering three properties.

Casinos by state - a final word

Casino gambling in the United States is prolific, but it remains concentrated in a fairly few states. Nevada, Oklahoma, and California account for nearly 50% of all available commercial and tribal casinos (1,011).

States such as South Dakota, Montana, and North Dakota rank among the highest in casinos per capita, while large population centers like Texas, Georgia, and Florida maintain surprisingly limited casino footprints due to regulatory restrictions.
