Netflix’s most celebrated foreign (and possibly overall) creator - Hwang Dong-hyuk - is returning for a new gripping high-stakes drama. The creator of the global blockbuster and one of the platform’s most-streamed shows of all time, Squid Game, will transport viewers to a different setting that will plunge them deep into the world of illegal gambling
Aptly called "The Dealer," the show follows a casino croupier - or dealer, as the title name suggests - who suddenly finds herself in a hard spot after she loses all her money to a housing scam.
Devasatted, Geonhwa seeks to remedy the situation by spiraling into the world of illegal gambling, where she sets out to win her money back and put this unfortunate chapter of her life behind her.
The South Korean TV series comes with a twist, which is characteristic of the cinema industry in the country, as Geonhwa is not just an ordinary woman who is looking forward to her wedding, which is now imperilled because of her recent unfortunate event - she also possesses a strange, supernatural talent.
Geonhwa can tell if someone is lying, which gives her the needed edge when she set outs to dominate the world of underground gambling, and seeks to navigate the danger posed by unsavory types as she continues to win.
The cast includes popular South Korean actors such as Jung So-min, Ryoo Seung-bum, Lee Soo-hyuk, and Ryu Kyung-soo.
While Squid Game fans may not be familiar with the cast, other than Ryu Kyung-soo, who was the doctor involved in the organ-harvesting subplot, viewers can expect another thrilling blockbuster by Hwang Dong-hyuk.
A further twist is added to the plot, as Geonhwa’s fiancé is none the wiser about his wife-to-be’s troubles, but he is himself a detective and would gradually come to suspect the shady dealings Geonhwa got herself involved in.
The Dealer has all the trappings to be a great movie about gambling, the latest to stream on Netflix, and to promise a great plot and excellent visual execution.
