Denmark is often cited as one of the safest gambling markets in Europe. Even though the jurisdiction has seen an increase in the overall number of problem gamblers, the country has kept an optimistic outlook and shown confidence that it will be able to tackle any gambling-relatedissue.

In line with this, Denmark’s Gaming Authority or Spillemyndigheden for its Danish acronym has decided to launch a MitID national electronic ID initiative that will be kicking in next month. The campaign is planned to go live on July 1 and it will seek to ensure that consumers of the legal gambling age access online gambling products.

It will similarly make it easier to comply with AML and KYC standards as the ID will automatically check for a number of factors. MitID is not a precedent as it’s replacing the outgoing NemID online verification platform. NemID has a much bigger scale than just gambling.

It has been used to authenticate one’s access to banking, and government institutions and has been working without a hitch since 2010. The part where people are able to prove theiridentity to digital services has been extremely popular and useful, especially to gambling operators looking to stay compliant with the country’s flinty gambling laws.

Now, all license holders will be required to switch to the bumper program that will prove a better, more advanced version of its predecessor and hopefully lead to better consumer protection in the gambling industry. A grace period will be granted to operators, Spillemyndigheden confirmed.

In other words, MitID and NemID will be both available for a while before the latter is completely phased out from operation, providing sufficient time for consumers and businesses to catch up. Online casinos and sports betting platforms are urged to make the shift as quickly as possible. MitID was admittedly supposed to launch back in 2021 but unexpected delays slowed down the deployment.

Denmark has been very active in keeping the industry up to the required standard of its own gambling laws. In May, the gaming authority reprimanded bet365 for shortcomings in the due diligence process. Earlier this year, Denmark reported that it was able to block a total of 55 illegal gambling websites from accessing its territory and targeting consumers.
