The Australian Communications Media Authority (ACMA) has issued a new round of blocks against several illegal gambling operators.
The enforcement action, targeting Play Jonny, ACO96, TCL99, Waboom77, Monaco, and WooSpin, is carried out with the help of internet service providers (ISPs), which have been asked to block user access to the aforementioned domains and platforms.
ACMA cited the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 as the basis of its enforcement action. The regulator has been actively looking to stamp out illegal gambling operators since it first began issuing ISP blocks back in November 2019.
Presently, the gambling platforms, affiliates, and a handful of suppliers blocked have reached 1,708, with 230 services leaving voluntarily, as they are legitimate businesses with a global reach and could risk reciprocal action from regulators overseas.
ACMA has reminded consumers to send tips about unregulated gambling websites and urged caution on the part of players, reminding them that online casinos are not regulated in Australia.
The regulator has been actively looking to stamp out illegal gambling websites, constantly vetting and barring websites from accessing Australian users. While some have called this a lost cause, due to these platforms’ ability to set their operations again, ACMA has stuck to its guns.
In December, the regulator blocked 12 services locally and followed up on this with more enforcement action, specifically in March, when more services were blocked.
