Pacquiao seeks to make history by defeating Mayweather

Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao is quite simply one of the best boxers in his category today. Yet, he has several ambitions in his sports career, and one of them is to defeat Floyd "Money" Mayweather.

The two previously met on May 2, 2015, which led to the fight to be dubbed the Fight of the Century, and the Battle for Greatness, and deservedly so.

It was an intense fight that Mayweather won by unanimous decision, with the judges going 118–110, 116–112, 116–112 on the final card.

The outcome was decried by the sports world and fans, who were split on whether Pacquiao had lost, with many attributing the loss to the judges’ mistake, or even bias against the former Philippine senator (yes, among other things, Pacquiao is actually a former elected official in his home country).

It is this record that Pacquiao is seeking to rectify.

PacMan has a prolific fighting record, but he is still behind Mayweather’s clean 50-0. Pacquiao himself stands at 57-5-2, with one of those defeats at the hands of Mayweather.

His most recent versus Mario Barrios, so there was no decisive winner, with the judges ruling on a draw.

Mayweather and Pacquiao are stoked about the upcoming rematch

Naturally, both fighters have been pretty excited about the upcoming event. Both have commented on their prospects in the rematch, and no surprises there. Money and PacMan have been projecting confidence all along.

For his part, Pacquiao has argued repeatedly that when he first fought Mayweather, he was still recovering from a shoulder injury and wasn’t in his prime form.

PacMan hasn’t foughtthat often since 2021, when he retired after a loss to Yordenis Ugas, although he did return to square up against Barrios, with Mayweather now back on the list.

The stakes are naturally high, as Mayweather wants to keep his pristine record, but PacMan is all but determined to ensure that he blemishes it:

"Floyd and I gave the world what remains the biggest fight in boxing history. The fans have waited long enough -- they deserve this rematch, and it will be even bigger now that it will be streamed live globally on Netflix. I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him."

Mayweather has been all cheek-in-tongue about this event as well: "I already fought and beat Manny once. This time will be the same result."

The odds still favor Mayweather over Pacquiao

Call it instinct, but sportsbooks are once again throwing their money behind Mayweather, with the opening odds having the undefeated boxer at -150. However, Pacquiao is hardly behind with his +130 while a draw seems the most unlikely event at +1600.

This means that if you bet $1 on the match to be a draw, you would receive $1,600 total, factoring in your original stake. To find out how to read better odds, check out our dedicated guide here.

Besides the odds, though, there are practical considerations here. Mayweather could arguably be the better boxer, and he has indeed fought prolifically, while not holding back or avoiding any fights.

This makes his record all the more impressive. He last defeated Conor McGregor, a boisterous MMA athlete turned boxer, in 2017 by knockout. This means that Mayweather has gone nearly 10 years without a fight.

Pacquiao, on the other hand, has been more consistent with the Barrios fight, serving as a direct test of his aptitude and prowess, which seem to remain unchanged. Much like their original clash, the outcome may depend on the judges’ decision.

Whatever the outcome, Pacquaio vs Mayweather 2 is highly-anticipated

More than eleven years after their first encounter captivated the boxing world, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are set to reignite one of the sport’s most debated rivalries.

For Mayweather, the mission is simple: preserve the spotless record and reaffirm his dominance over a familiar foe.

For Pacquiao, the stakes are far greater: a chance to rewrite history, silence lingering doubts about the 2015 decision, and become the only man to defeat "Money."
