Brendan Sorsby’s story continues, with the player probing every opportunity he gets to continue playing football in a professional capacity.
After Sorsby withdrew his lawsuit against the NCAA and quit college-level football a week ago, the NFL dealt the player another blow, announcing it would not hold the NFL Supplemental Draft this year, prompting the player to attempt to join the CFL instead.
But this avenue has been exhausted as well, as the CFL confirmed on Friday, June 26, 2026, that the 22-year-old player will not be able to sign with any team or be placed on the negotiation lists for the time being.
Similar to the NFL Management Council’s remarks, which brought up the integrity of the game, the CFL questioned whether Sorsby would not pose a threat to the integrity of its own competition.
In a statement, the CFL explained: "Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL. The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning. At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list."
Sorsby, for his part, has addressed the ongoing issues he has experienced with his gambling habits. Sorsby admitted to having placed hundreds of wagers worth at least $90,000, either himself or through third parties.
This originally brought his eligibility into question, with the NCAA banning him from play and setting the chain reaction of events that led to the current predicament where Sorsby is scrambling to continue his football career, but has been denied by the NCAA, NFL, and now the CFL.
This leaves him with limited options, although the NFL and CFL have not said outright that they would not theoretically allow Sorsby to play in the future. However, his chances appear slim as he will be denied participation in the upcoming season.
He also planned to work out in front of NFL scouts on July 10, 2026, with these plans now questioned, as even if a team were to root for the player, they would not be able to bring him onto their roster.
Sorsby may still spend his time preparing for the 2027 NFL Draft, which he will most certainly pursue as an option if all else fails.
