GeoComply has reported that 3.2m geolocation checks took place following the Alberta iGaming launch on July 13, and over the first week of activity.
The company, which is based in Vancouver and specializes in providing geolocation services that ensure that people connecting with sports betting and online casino platforms remain compliant with cross-border restrictions, shared details about the opening days of gambling.
According to the company, the first 72 hours were some of the busiest, with the Edmonton and Calgary regions driving the traffic, and the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina triggering 53,000 geolocation checks on July 19.
GeoComply Chair and Co-founder Anna Sainsbury has welcomed the opportunity to see Albertans having more options to engage in safe, regulated, and responsible gambling through the market liberalization.
"More than 100,000 Albertans across the province signed up through GeoComply-enabled platforms and engaged with licensed operators right out of the gate. We’re proud that our Canadian team gets to help operators do it right in Alberta," Sainsbury noted.
GeoComply did caution that the snapshot was just an initial estimate, and th market may actually be larger than its current figures suggest. For one, these numbers are only derived from partner operators.
The market launched with 22 gambling operators on July 13, and will most likely continue to scale up, as 50 betting operators in total are now registered with the Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis.
"Albertans were eager to expand their choices of safe, regulated ways to play, and the final matches of the World Cup gave us an immediate look at the market in action," Sainsbury noted.
GeoComply recently announced staff reduction with 80 positions cut across the globe, as the company focuses on streamlining its operations and harnessing technology to boost productiivy and results.
